batfish, Are you working close to Wake Forest? There is a lot of new development in the area, but I think it can be sort of a haul to get around. From WF it's at least 30 minutes into downtown Raleigh. If you're working in RTP, 540 will really help the drive though.

That said, I used to coach up there and would run on a trail at Falls Lake. It's not very well maintained and very wooded, but it works.

Bob and bit, how are y'all feeling?? Ready to run??

I ran Thursday totally pain free for the first time since... September? Maybe longer. I think the new orthotics are really awesome. I wish I or someone had figured this out 6 months ago! But who cares, it's fixed now. Yay for running!

With less than a week to go, I have learned that Saturday during the marathon the high will be over eighty degrees! The low the night before is expected to be 60 degrees. I expect the average temperature to be well over seventy degrees during the marathon. Now this puts a damper on things!

Hi, all. I'm a Raleigh runner who runs about a 15 minute mile. I'm looking for someone to run with about once a week around Shelly Lake once or twice. Please email me at yanelh@hotmail.com.

I feel totally recovered from the last marathon, but I am worried that I am not in marathon shape anymore.

That combined with the potential heat, late start, and the tough course has me thinking this will be my slowest marathon yet!

But oh well, that's part of marathoning!

We are going to have a high temperature during the marathon: The forecast low Friday night is 61 degrees and the forecast high Saturday is 83 degrees. With a 9 AM start, we will get little morning relief! I'm adjusting my goal from 4:20 to 4:30 to take into account the heat.

Well tapering feels nice. Good solid nine mile run yesterday in Umstead--felt good after running long runs that take over three hours. Little bit of PF in the right foot and a mild ankle problem in the left foot--plus a minor digestive disorder that bothering me--but who's complaining.

If you see me at the race, say hello. I have not decided if I will wear a shirt or not.

I'm going to be working at RTP, in Durham. Quite a haul, as I understand it. It looks like my best bet would be 98 west from WF to Durham. I'm not sure it's really doable, which is too bad, because I really liked (most) of what I saw of WF and was excited to relocate there. I do commute off-hours (pre-dawn in the morning, 4-ish in the afternoon). Not sure if that would help.

Nice to hear that there's a trail at Falls Lake! I bought a local Gazateer (DeLorme) while I was down there, and they claim that there is a 13 mile trail in the park. I can't seem to confirm this against the park's website. Can you confirm this? Is is reasonable footing?

Anyway, I had a great trip to RTP. I ran four times in Umstead, and loved it.

I ran a 9.7 mile loop, starting at the front gate (locked when I arrived in the AM), down the park road to the Reedy Creek Lake Trail, then right on South Turkey Creek (big hill!), around North Turkey Creek (more big hills!) and on to the Gralyn trail, the back to Reedy Creek and out the way I came. What a great route - plenty of twists and turns and some nice hills! The trail is in great shape - like a running track in the woods.

Edited to add: Good luck with that marathon, Bob! After running 30+ miles in Umstead this past week, I tip my hat to anyone who has the courage to run a marathon on that terrain! Hills!

We probably crossed paths at some point this past week.

Sorry for this upsetting news story, but I am glad he was caught.
http://www.wral.com/news/7813839/detail.html

RALEIGH, N.C. -- There is a break in the investigation of an attack on a jogger who was assaulted on Friday.

Raleigh police arrested Jamaal McLeod and charged with second-degree sexual assault.

Police said a woman was attacked while she was jogging on the Raleigh Greenway near Raleigh Boulevard.

"The individual approached her as she was jogging along, grabbed her, touched her inappropriately, dragged her to the ground and struggled with her until she was able to break free, so it was a very forceful act," said Jim Sughrue, of the Raleigh Police Department.

Court records show McLeod was charged with the same crime in April 2005. He was put on probation and ordered to do community service. He did not spend any time in jail for the incident.

Hello all,

This may seem like a random post, but considering the topic I figured what better thread to post this on:

Can anyone tell me about the Raleigh area? I live in the suburbs just outside New York City and am contemplating a move to a less-expensive area of the country. I've been focused on NC for various reasons, but have only been to Charlotte. As a single near-30-something, I thought maybe Raleigh and the surrounding areas would have more to offer than where I currently live. Of course, it's mainly the job thing (not having one down there) that prevents me from packing up and going. Anyway, just thought I'd put the feelers out on this subject that has been plaguing me for a while.

Thanks!

Bob, sounds like you ran a pretty smart race and are happy with the results. I agree about spending more time at the aid stations. I started out drinking about half a cup at each station, but by the end I was drinking 2 cups at each. I had a really tough time with the heat and did a lot of walking (close to 3 miles worth). Another mistake for me was only taking half a gel at mile 16(?) and going out too fast.
By mile 20, I was dizzy and seeing black spots (don't know what that was about. dehydrated?). But I really did not want to quit.

I had not run the entire course before, so I was pretty surprised by the hills. I did actually "enjoy" them though.

I was disappointed with my time (4:05), but I am happy that I did that race and I will be back next year! I love Umstead.

And another weird thing is that I had/have no pain or soreness after the race. Is that normal since we were on a soft surface? Or maybe it was because I walked so much?

Bit, I think you did great. Yes it is no fun to walk, but still 4:05 is the 2nd place in the female division and that is no little thing.

I feel very sore--even today. So I chalk up your lack of soreness to walking some and your excellent recovery ability.

Thanks Bob!

I have a lot to learn about training for and running marathons.

Usually I am sore for 2 days, so I was pleasantly surprised this time around. I am sure being 25 years old helps with the recovery too!

Now I need to figure out what's next!

Here is a link to many of the races in the area:
http://www.runnc.com/exec/young/schedule.cfm?publicationID=283

The next big race is the Cary Road Race with the 10k being very popular. I ran the Cary 10k last year and it was great. I cannot run it this year, but I highly recommend it.

My next scheduled race is Grandfather Mountain Marathon in Boone, NC: http://www.hopeformarrow.org/gmminfo.htm

I might see if I could fit in a 5k or 10k race, but it will be tough with my schedule and training.

I think you really showed some spunk getting 2nd place. It looks like you may have some great runs ahead of you.

Thanks for the link. The Cary Road Race sounds great!

The GMM sounds tough. Good luck! (I am going to have to consider this one.)

If you are thinking about the Granddfather Marathon, consider signing up soon since they will sell out here in about a month or less.

Bit let me tell you that Grandfather is pretty tough not only for the longer hills, but for the heat which can be worse than we faced last week. On top of that, Grandfather Marathon is not known for its service--they may or may not have Gatorade at each station, they have no toilets (except at the beginning) and the race director is something close to the Soup-Nazi. Also, you run on a small two lane highway for more than 1/2 the marathon. On top of all that, there is a five hour time limit--of course not a problem for you--but me on the other hand....

But if you finish, you can say you ran one of the toughest marathons.

Thanks for the warnings.
I am still trying to figure out what races I would like to run this spring and summer.
If I decide to run GMM, it would just be for fun and to finish (if those two can go together.) I wouldn't have any time expectations. But, I may just run shorter races this summer.

I would really like to train with an actual training schedule (Pfitz) this fall and try to PR in the marathon. I am not sure which one I want to run though. I am new to NC and there are quite a few within driving distance. There is plenty of time to decide though!

This is for Deb22 concerning the Raleigh area. I am not a native to this area, but I am from a neighboring state. I have new neighbors who did just what you seem to be contemplating, they left NY (Long Island) I think for cost of living and lifestyle reasons (they have young children). The cost of living is much less - although housing seems to be getting more expensive all the time. That "more expensive" is relative though - it is not anywhere near the cost of the urban / suburban northeast. The job market is very strong. Should you make such a move you will not be alone, this is a growing area with folks from all over (the northeast, mid-west, Florida...). I have been frankly surprised at the number of folks who have moved here with no job at all - most seem to do quite well in short order.

Assuming you are a runner (why else would you be cruising thru this site?), the climate for running is pretty good - at least four to six weeks of warm weather at either end of the summer than further north. Although summers can be brutal July through September.

Hey all,

I haven't posted in a while. I took a lot longer off than I wanted to after the new year but I'm getting back into the swing of things. I've worked back up to a 35 mile week. I plan to use a 24-week training plan that works up to 55 mpw (from Advanced Marathoning) and I've picked my race for this year:

http://obxmarathon.org/

I had wanted to qualify for the '07 Boston, which I now think is optimistic, but we'll see how things progress.

Bob - good job at Umstead and good luck with Grandfather mountain. Hope to see you at one of the upcoming road races.

Bit for a summer race, I like the Run for the Bulls 10k in Fayetteville:
http://www.cincodemayo10k.org/Toros.htm
Tough race, but fun too.

For a fall marathon that is near by, I think Richmond is the best. Richmond has some hills, but not bad. Charlotte marathon is very hilly. Jay's Outer Banks marathon looks interesting.

For a spring marathon and setting a new PR, Shamrock at Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach marathon are flat.

Hope to see you out on the trails.

Jay, looking forward to seeing you soon out at Umstead. I plan on training there twice a week running the 7.25 mile loop 2-3 times for my long run.

Bob

Bob - not sure which the 7.25 mile loop is.

I'm running there on Sundays around 9:00 AM. I start at North Cary Park, run the greenway to Reedy Creek Rd into the park and stay on the Reedy Creek bridle trail all the way to the footbridge (I guess that's Ready Creek it crosses?) and then head back. It's just a little over 11 miles.

I may run the tobacco trail this weekend though for a little variety.

BTW, I came across this a couple months ago. Great resource for finding running routes:

The 7.25 loop is South Turkey Creek Trail to North Turkey Creek Trail to Graylon Trail to Reedy Creek Trail back to South Turkey Creek Trail. It is an excellent workout becasue it comprises the highest part of Umstead with the lowest.
Here is a map of the park for reference:
http://www.ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/wium/wium.pdf

I'm going to try to get two loops done Sunday. Ran the ATT today for 5.3 miles--I always appreciate that trail.

Thanks for the route link.

Hi everyone --
I'm looking for a little advice: my school is hosting our annual "dog day run" on April 8, and we haven't had many participants sign up... any ideas on where we could advertise this? We've hit the major area running stores and active.com

http://www.cvm.ncsu.edu:8110/news/dogday_race/

Thanks for any suggestions.

I would suggest the North Carolina Roadrunners Club, but there is not much time before the race. Other than that, I would think the local running stores would be your best bet.

Good luck.
