Wow. I need to pay more attention to the Raleigh thread. I've been remiss in posting on CR lately, but maybe some local chatter will get me back in the mood. quote: Originally posted by runramy: Hey all. Are we quiet in NC during the winter? My dad is training for Ironman Arizona. Hearing his run and bike reports is enough to make me want to get back out there. I'm pretty out of shape by now. All my good intentions went out the window. I am surprised by this every time!
I spent a week in AZ during the middle of January (for the Rock 'n Roll Marathon - woot!) and it's really nice out there. When I left Tempe, I believe they were on their 93rd consecutive day w/o rain. Great for the tourists, must be a real pain for everyone who lives there. Not so sure about being there in April for the Ironman, however; average highs in the low-mid 80's?? Yikes! But to address the question, no, it's not completely quiet in NC during "winter". And glad to hear you're back after the stress fracture! Oddly enough, looking back over the last couple of months on the thread, I see you went to the Grand Prix banquet. I believe I sat next to you and Mike during lunch. Small world.

AGH! Duck out for a few days and it all goes crazy! Geez. Anyway, for the orthopaedist question. I go to Cary Ortho (www.caryortho.com) and have sent friends there. I like them a lot.

Were we the dorky couple? Hey, I'm just glad I'm not the one doing the Ironman. For a variety of reasons. And did you have a race report on RNR?? How did it go?

Biochem? Bug killing research? I'll let you make the dorky determination. Never got around to posting a race report (see, toldja I was being remiss), but I enjoyed myself. I think it was a bit unfortunate that my race was just after the holiday season, not to mention a friend's birthday-weekend-blowout-extravaganza... [And nevermind the fact that we got to AZ about 5 days before the race and proceeded to party like rockstars. I mean really, $1.75 Corona? ] I ran it in just over 4 hours, slower than I wanted for my inaugural marathon, but it leaves me some room to improve this season. It started great, with my half split right around 1hr 52min. I was still doing well until mile 22/23, where I completely ran out of fuel. *sigh* Once I realized my sub-4 hour goal was not going to happen, I dropped to a pace that I thought my keep me from collapsing. Run and learn. I'm in a much more diligent training mode now, preparing for the RNR in Nashville, TN on April 29 and ultimately for Chicago this Fall. So, midday Sunday runs in Umstead anyone?

I'm out there, training for the Knoxville 1/2 maraton 3/26. I like to overdistance train for halfs (halves?)

OK, I did it. I signed up for Grandfather Mountain Marathon. Here is the link: http://www.hopeformarrow.org/gmminfo.htmI'm going to slingshot my training for Umstead Marathon into training for Grandfather. Anyone else going to run Grandfather? Bob

I've just started running with my son in his stroller and am looking for a 5K (or a 10K but not sure I want to start at that distance) this spring that has a stroller division. Does anyone know of any such races in the RTP area? I need a race to get me motivated run in the cold!------------------

I'm doing Buffalo over Memorial Day, so I'll be at Umstead on the weekends. Grandfather Mountain? Are you crazy? I heard that's a hilly one. And finally, yes, we're really big dorks. But we're OK with it, and that's the important thing, right? P.S. Congrats on completing your marathon! And it sounds like it couldn't have been too bad, or you wouldn't be planning the next one.

Well not quite yet finished with Umstead Trail Marathon yet--it starts March 11--same day as Run For The Oaks 5k. Our company is going to have a team at the Oaks 5k. I wish I could run on the team.I have backed off on the milage recently with my training since I have been starting to feel that I was over-training. I wish I could run the marathon next week. I plan on trying out this new Furman FIRST program to train for Grandfather. Here are details of the running program: http://www.furman.edu/first/1.htm Bob

I've heard some very positive things about the FIRST program, Bob. They've gotten a lot more folks on the bandwagon after the program appeared in RW a few months back. In fact, the new issue has a FIRST half marathon plan, if anyone is interested - same basic 3 key run principle.I'm with Amy on the yikes factor of running Grandfather. Bet it's a scenic one if you aren't too focused on time, though.

Not sure about the presence of a stroller division, but maybe the Angels Among Us 5K in Durham would be worth a shot? It's 8am on April 1. The contact is Lisa D'Amico ( damic002@mc.duke.edu)

whats up Raleigh, i've lived here since '92, ran XC at Leesville in north Raleigh and now go to NC State and just ran my first marathon, the Thunder Road Marathon in Charlotte, in December which qualified me for the boston marathon in April. So I was wondering if there was anyone out there who has run boston and could recommend a route here that would simulate the types of hills i'm gonna see in April?? Since the school year started in August, I've been running exclusively at lake johnson due to proximity and the few hills it has, but it is starting to get a little boring.

Good to hear of another stroller runner. I have a two year old son and a daughter on the way. I have run 13 races(5K, 8K, and 10K) with my son in a stroller in each of the last two years. Raleigh/Cary races are actually very stroller friendly. Almost every race in this area will allow strollers with a few restrictions like helmets and large diameter wheels. It is actually very rewarding running with a stroller as long as the child is into it. My son wakes me up at 6:45 AM most mornings because he wants to go running. We do a 5K course for training runs. If you want any advice on a good stroller just let me know. Check out runnc.com. Almost every race listed there will allow Strollers. The Cary road race will allow strollers in the 10K. They usually give awards for the stroller division also. If you want some hard core competition then train for the fall. The Old Reliable 10K has some crazy competition in their stroller division. See you at the next race. You will know who I am by my sons license plate! You could do the run for the roses in north Raleigh this weekend. I ran that one last year with him. It is hilly but it is a good safe course. I will be out of town so I have to miss it.

Roadrunner83, congratulations on Boston. Our hills in many spots around the triangle are worse than Boston. I would recommend doing some training on the bridle trails in Umstead State Park, but I would also do some on the pavement to get use to the pace. The training in Umstead would have tougher hills and a slower pace due to the softer surface.Bob ------------------ There will come a point in the race, when you alone will need to decide. bob, thanks for the advice. ran umstead/cary greenway for my long run today. umstead's hills are a longer with less grade than the ones at lake johnson, it's a lot better to run as well as i didnt have to dodge people the whole time too. hopefully i'll be able to handle whatever heartbreak hill has to dish out come april.

Roadrunner83, try North Turkey Creek Trail in Umstead. Run this near the end of your long run and you can run through anything.Bob

OK, so I just figured out Sunday how I ended up with the stress fracture. The heel of my orthotic was slightly too high, causing me to run as if I were in platform shoes - or forefoot striking. Wow, I can't believe I never figured that out.So, now I have new orthotics and I'm looking forward to getting in shape for Buffalo. I'm also submitting a claim to BCBS for $1500 for having to diagnose and treat myself, as well as coming up with my own plan for recovery and prevention.

BCBS will accept your claim, but down rate the payment to $15 saying that this is a normal and customary charge.Last 20 mile run last Saturday--very nice morning before the weather went bad. I found second half of the run pretty tough. I was in way too much pain. I'm a little worried about how my marathon March 11th will go, but I'm pretty confident I will do well. My new goal is to beat 4:20--twenty-one minutes faster than last year. Dealing with a stomach issue right now, so I hope to be in good health here soon. Bob

Bob, I am running the Umstead marathon for the first time and am not sure what pace I should expect to be able to run. How much slower have you run the Umstead marathon vs. a regular road marathon? I have done many of my long runs in Umstead, but I don't think I was on the actual marathon course. Thanks!

Bit, welcome. Well I do most of my running on bridle trails in Umstead and the American Tobacco Trail (very flat trail). I have done some research on how much Umstead effects my pace compared to a flat trail or a road surface. For me Umstead slows me down my about one minute per mile in a marathon compared to running a race on a road with mild hills. I have found that the faster runners have less detriment to their pace-- 3:00-3:30 runners seem to have a 15-30 second slower pace (I did this my looking up races other runners did on the road and what they did in the 2004 Umstead Marathon).Much will depend on your training, your health and weight. I have improved since my last marathon in Umstead. I did 4:40 in the Umstead Marathon last year (I did 4:25 with a cold on November 2004 Richmond marathon). My goal for this Umstead 2006 is 4:20--so I think I could break four hours in Richmond if I ran it this year. Umstead is a very tough course. If you go out too fast, you will have some slow guy like me pass you at mile 17-22 saying something like keep up the pace, and you don't want that. Bob P.S. I suggest running the 3.15 miles of hiking trails shown on the course map before the race so you can be better prepared for pacing. These hiking trails are tough and since they are done at the beginning, they could have you use too much energy getting through them. http://www.carolinagodiva.org/umsteadmarathon/umstead2006map.jpg ------------------ There will come a point in the race, when you alone will need to decide. Bob, Thanks for such a well thought out answer. I appreciate it. I am not very good at pacing so I will need to be extra careful the first few miles. I always go out too fast. I just ran the mercedes marathon on Feb. 12th in 3:28. Hopefully I will still be in pretty good shape for Umstead. Thanks for the link. I will try to run those trails soon!

I hope to see you. I plan on a 13 mile run at marathon pace up and down Reedy Creek Trail and I will include both Company Mill Trail and Sycamore Trail--both on the course. Haven't decided on Saturday or Sunday morning. I also suggest you check out Cedar Ridge Trail. This is done at the end of the race and it has a very steep section near the end of the trail that has some similarities to a hiking trail. Pacing is even more difficult because the terrain changes so much. You have to have a pace for flat areas, trails, steep vs. shallow grade hills, etc. Your 3:28 is pretty good. I'm sure you will do well in this race. Bob

Thanks again, Bob.I will be out of town this weekend, so I will have to try and run those trails sometime next week. Say "hi" if you see me at the race. Look for a little, red headed girl. Have a great weekend!

Hi Raleigh folks! Thanks for the answers to my earlier question on this thread (about moving to the area). It looks like the move is going to happen. Our realtor is really steering us towards Wake Forest, so I hope I'll find some places to run if we end up there! Are there trails in that 'Falls Lake' recreation area? I'm going to be in the area next week. I'm staying on Westpark Drive, in Durham for eight days. Could someone recommend some good places to run in that area? I'll probably drive out to Umstead once or twice, but I'm time limited, so hopefully, there'll be something closer by, too. Thanks! ------------------ Batfish Profile The Newbie Wiki
