Other than a bit of rain a few days ago the weather has been real nice. I ate a bit too much over the holiday but that is to be expected I guess.Has anyone ever run the trails at the Falls Dam park off of Falls of Neuse Road? I rode my bike over there the other day and it looked pretty interesting. I live maybe a mile or so from there.

I am new to running in Raleigh (and the city) and it looks like I will have to start running in the AM. What kinda advice can ya'll give me about running in the AM. I live right off Millbrook and am not really scared to run around here in the dark on sidewalks. Any advice and tips would be great. Leslie

Leslie,
I run along Creedmoor and down Millbrook going towards Glenwood on most mornings. The roads seem fairly safe, but remember that I am a guy and guys tend to have different perceptions about safety (or so my wife tells me). Most of Millbrook is well lit with the streetlights so lighting should not be a problem. However, I tend to run on the road instead of the sidewalk. I have fallen on my face too many times when I tripped over a crack in the sidewalk. Good luck and wave to me if you see me out between 5:30 and 7:00 am.

I don't know where you live on Millbrook, but a word of caution: the stretch between Six Forks and Falls of Neuse looks beautiful when you drive it in your car but it actually kind of sucks when you run it because the sidewalks are in such a state of disrepair there are many areas of uneven pavement and potholes. I would be very careful running in the dark.

Hey I just found this thread. It looks like Raleigh is a pretty popular place to run! I live and train in Cary near the YMCA. Are there any runners who train in the Olde Salem neighborhood off of West High? I usually run with a jogging stroller. They seem to be very popular in Cary. There is actually a pretty good course that I do in our neighborhood. Kinda hilly but nothing extreme like that Southern Village run I did on December 11th. That thing rose about 100 ft in about ¼ of a mile. Is anyone going to do the Race on Centenial campus this weekend? I might do it if it doesn’t rain. They don’t allow jogging strollers though. That is the first race this year that has not allowed them. Oh well I will see if I can set a PR. Is that course Hilly?

RunBobaluRun,Yes I had planned on doing that race. However, I understand that it is a trail run. Is that true? I have run arround part of lake crabtree before and it was all paved but I am not sure if this course is all paved. The reason I ask is because I want to use the jogging stroller in this race. It may be too narrow for the stroller also. I might just skip this one and do the Run for the roses arround valentines day. That is a tough course with a stroller. The last 1.5 miles is all up hill! Thanks for the heads up though.

Here is a link to the site where I found the information: http://www.runnc.com/raceinfo.htmI see they have wheelchairs, so maybe stollers are OK. You can email the race director and find out. Best of luck with your racing. Bob

Hey lesil, it doesn't matter if you're scared or not, still use caution when running alone, OK? There are women in Raleigh who have been either assaulted or an attempt made. Do carry runner pepper spray with you and if possible find a running partner. As for me - IT'S JANUARY 1! I think that means I can hit the road again. Do not worry, I shall use caution and Pete Pfitzinger's advice to come back from my tiny little stress fracture injury. Plus new shoes. Woot! I love new shoes...

Runnc.com is down right now. I emailed the site director and he said that it is just undergoing some maintenance this week. Running in Raleigh would not be nearly as good without the efforts that Jim Young and others put in to organize the events. We defintely have one of the best cities for running and racing!

Recently started back running after many years away from it. I live in Southern Wake County, near Fuquay Varina. I run some of the backroads during my long run and they are great. I run in my neighborhood and the old residential part of Fuquay for regular training runs, which are also nice. I've been thinking about trying the American Tobacco Trail sometime. Any suggestions for other places in Southern Wake?

Well did my 20 in Umstead last week and boy was that tough! Training for Umstead marathon is hot and heavy. Did 15 miler at marathon pace in Umstead yesterday--even had my racing shoes on. I felt strong through the fifteen miler--still to hit my 4:25 or better goal, I have my work cut out for me.This weather has been beautiful. It is so nice to run in the thirties and forties. Bob

Woo hoo woo hoo! Guess who ran yesterday?! If you guessed me, you'd be right.I did NOT run 20 in Umstead. However, I did run for about 20ish minutes. I walked 7:00 to warm up, then 3:00 running, then 6:00 walking, 3:00 running and about 2:00 walking to finish. I'm using Pfitzinger's suggested plan for coming back from a stress fracture. http://www.pfitzinger.com/labreports/stressfracture.shtml It KILLS ME to do this. I mean, I used to just go out and run, no sweat. OK, a lot of sweat, but no problems. I hate going only 1.5 miles, and I hate hate hate walking. Oh, I also bought a pair of NB 1221's this weekend. I have high hopes for them. I went to the NB store on Glenwood. Neil was very helpful. Based on the research gathering I'd done before, I was pretty sure that's what they'd recommend. They're expensive shoes, but have a really good reputation.

Hey all. Are we quiet in NC during the winter? My dad is training for Ironman Arizona. Hearing his run and bike reports is enough to make me want to get back out there. I'm pretty out of shape by now. All my good intentions went out the window. I am surprised by this every time!

Hi Folks! This is a little off-topic, sorry. There's a fair chance that I'll be relocating to the Raleigh/Durham area in a couple of months. I'll need to find a new house, but I'm not familiar with the area. So, in your opinions, which area(s) would be good choices for an avid runner? I'm thinking of access to great running trails (I love running on trails), lots of safe areas to run, that sort of thing... Thanks, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

A house near Umstead would be the best running. That would be a house in North Cary or West-North Raleigh.

Umstead marathon course is out: http://www.carolinagodiva.org/umsteadmarathon/Knocked out another twenty last Sunday in Umstead with a ten minute per mile pace--much better that last year. I have decided that a 4:15 goal is right for me. That is a big improvement over the 4:40 I did in the last Umstead marathon. I feel pretty strong, but the twenty did slow me down and the training is intense. Seventeen for this Sunday--no walk in the park. Anyone going to the Myrtle Beach marathon? Bob

That is the most confusing course map I have ever seen. I am not running the race but thought I would try to run the course in my own marathon training but I can't figure it out, even when I printed it out.

Batfish- I've lived all over the raleigh/durham/ch area, so I'll give you my opinion. Driving around this area can be really nasty getting to and from work, (but generally good otherwise) so I would recommend trying to live near where you work. Umstead is easy to get to from raleigh or durham because it is right off of I-40, so you can always drive there for a run if you want. Also, Durham near dook and dook forest have some cool trails and Chapel hill has a terrific trail system. Same thing with many parts of raleigh, especially north raleigh, which is where I grew up. Basically I'm trying to say that where ever you are you will be near some great running areas. If you have children I would worry more about school districts, otherwise I'd think about being near work in terms of location. In my biased opinion, raleigh and chapel hill are better places to live than durham or cary, but the whole area is terrific really. By the way, just in case you live in a colder place than this... it was 62 and sunny here today.

Hey good luck in the move. I would recommend Holly Springs, FuquaVarina, Apex or South Cary. I live in Apex near Holly Springs and there is plenty of running around here and it takes me twenty minutes to get to Raleigh Greenway or Umstead Park. Pretty safe down here and schools are new and great. Not busing kids down here either.

Hi all, I just wanted to let everyone know that a great little road race is being planned for the weekend of April 22nd around NCSU's campus to benefit a really good charity organization, Dustin's Greenhouse. There will be great prizes and the event will be very well run. If anyone is interested please feel free to give me an e-mail at rjminto@ncsu.edu. Thanks, Ryan
