Our guys are nice around here.Well, here's the status: I know nothing more. The x-ray of my tibia was interesting, but nothing showed up. I learned the pain is in an unusual place for a shin stress fracture (about 2 inches below my knee, not down in the narrow part of my shin above the ankle). Tomorrow I get a bone scan! Now I get to see my tibia in 3D, I think. I'm just annoyed because I feel like this will be really simple like get new shoes, ice it, take advil, rest til the pain goes away, then come back very very slowly. I did take 2 weeks off in October and the pain started back immediately upon running again. I think I'll go to Athlete's Foot and get them to do their analysis things and see if they can recommend some new shoes. I'm not satisfied with my current ones.

Hey, folks. Just discovered the forum. I do upwards of twenty area races a year; the I/O was my first half-marathon (how do you run out of post-race food while runners are still finishing?) and set a 10-year PR at the Old Reliable. My favorites are the Cary RITNY, Franklin, Angels Among Us, Cooper River, Race of Grace, Race for the Cure, 2nd Empire and the Dalmatian Dash. One of my favorite trails that I haven't seen mentioned here is the new Museum-to-Meredith trail over the beltline pedestrian bridge. Also recommend Lake Johnson, Lake Lynn, Ridge Road, Glenwood between Peace and Five Points, and, of course, Umstead. Looking forward to trying the ATT. I'm not as fast as I look, however. :-)Brad "they will run and not get weary" - Isaiah 40:31

Welcome Misterfun. Yaa they ran out of food, but it didn't bother me much. When they ran out of water at the Old Reliable, I was a bit bothered. They brought in a hose and started filling cups with that--so I got my drink eventually.ATT in Wake County is a great training area--flat, soft, 1/2 mile markers, and beautiful scenery. Bob

Welcome, Misterfun! It's never too late to join the party. Gosh, I forgot the water thing. Probably because I was a little overhydrated and then ended up not running.

welcome, misterfun!Where does the museum trail start, and how long is it? Is it paved? I need to find some non-asphalt running surfaces (aka grass) but it's HARD! Everywhere around here is paved! I finally broke down and decided that I'd go to the reedy creek schools and run on the track so that I'd get off these hard surfaces. I arrived only to find out. . . what is the track made of? Asphalt. I've never heard of that! Really disappointing. Any advice? I'm in Cary now and I need somewhere close and grassy. That museum trail would be close but I'm betting it's paved.

If you on the west side of Cary, you may not be too far from the American Tobacco Trail parking lot. If you are near the center or north Cary, Umstead is close. Both these parks have excellent bridle trails.Bob [This message has been edited by RunBobaluRun (edited Nov-18-2005).]

I am pretty sure the Museum Trail is asphalt like the rest of the greenway. Bob's suggestion for running in Umstead might be the best way to avoid running on concrete or ashpalt; however therer are those slight hills in Umstead to consider. I am hoping to get back into my routine of running in Umstead every other weekend or so. I hate the hills when I am running them, but my joints like the hills and my ego likes the hills once I have finished. ------------------ My Profile

Ack is right, Amy! Take care of yourself and we'll hope for quick healing. I'm having one of those inner dialogs today - do I run tonight or do I take it off? Lots of reasons to run, lots of reasons to take it off. Good reasons on each side, even. Guess we'll see in 4 hours when I leave work and turn left for the gym or right for home. Safe running to everyone over the weekend, especially anyone racing.

Just wanted to drop an invite to you guys to join some of the south easstern ClubHouser's December 3rd at the Charlotte marathon. We have two relay teams set up already, but we'd love to have anyone interested come join us. I think there's a 10k option. There'll be a social after the race. I don't think there's a recent thread going in there right now, but just post a new one or chase down sistergoldenhair, luckylily, GaReb, Profound Samurai, DogMom or myself.

Knoxes, I would love to come join you, but I am recovering from Richmond and can't make it. However, we are looking forward to a detailed report on the festivities. ------------------ My Profile

Oh, does anyone know any gyms with pools in Cary? Coworkers have suggested Rex Health and I used to coach at the Y, so I'm familiar with those. I'd like something not too expensive or crowded, though. (I know, a not crowded pool in the Raleigh area?!)

Amy,I have just recently learned about the Optimist Pool off of Six Forks Rd in Raleigh. I understand that it is a covered (with a bubble) pool open to people for a small fee. The Pullen pool is also open year round. Neither of these is in Cary, but they might be better than nothing.

Well, I was a guard with the City and the Y for a long time, not to mention the 2 years I spent as a year-round swim coach with the Y... Ironic I'm having to search for a pool now.I found 4 options that would work (and I'm posting them in case it helps someone else out). 1. Morrisville Rec Center - Bubble, 5 lanes, $3 entry fee if you're a resident, $6 otherwise. Pretty inconvenient lap swim times for people who work. Doesn't appear to open til 10 am or so. 2. Rex Health and Wellness - Fairly steep sign up fee ($200) and it would be $88 / month for both Mike and me to join. However, more convenient lap swim times. 3. Cary YMCA - For my age group (young adult) it's $95 joining fee and $30 / month. It gets much more expensive if you add family members, etc, but we will probably go this route for location and time conveniences. 4. Pullen Park - Several ways to "join" from one time use fee, punch cards (15 sessions), month sessions (30), or year long passes. I used to guard here and can say it's a good facility, you just have to be prepared to share lanes early in the morning, especially if it's swim season and the high schoolers are there.

So, I find that I really do learn something new every day. I have actually learned 2 things today, which lets me off the hook for tomorrow.1. Check this out: www.mapmyrun.com Someone posted it on a Newbie thread. It seems to be accurate in that we both agree on the distance of my 3 mile loop. 2. Dr. Curzan told me to take Tylenol, not ibuprofen! What?! I'm a runner, I treat every injury with ice and advil! He said there is some research which indicates ibuprofen may inhibit bone healing. Huh. Who knew?!

Well I decided to delay signing up for the Umstead Marathon just in case I get injuried. I look at the web site yesterday and in ten days they signed up 148 out of a maximum of 200. Well I went ahead and got signed up. It looks like this will get full sometime in December.http://www.umsteadmarathon.com/index.html Bob ------------------ There will come a point in the race, when you alone will need to decide. Has anyone measured the South Turkey Creek Trail in Umstead from the East gate on Reedy Creek Trail to the beginning of North Turkey Creek Trail? I'll take GPS or better. The map in the web site Umstead Coalition is inaccurate due to the trail being extended a couple of times. Bob

I can hardle believe that the Umstead marathon is almost sold out. Twenty-one spots are left as of 11/27/05 out of 200. I'm glad the marathon has grown in popularity. Training is going well witha 14.4 run yesterday in Umstead including North Turkey Creek trail twice. My hands were pretty cold in the early morning!http://www.umsteadmarathon.com/index.html Feeling good--not fast--just good. My feet, ankles and knees have improved since I've started using a well cushioned insert in my shoes. Bob

Merrill Lynch Turkey Trot Race ReportThis 5 mile race is run in Garden City, NY. They've been running it over 20 years. This was my second year running it. Last year I ran it just under 40. It's a nice course, almost completely flat, run through a fairly nice residential neighborhood. This year I wanted to redeem myself for my poor Old Reliable showing. My target was 7:15 pace to finish in 36:15. The night before they were forcasting snow overnight, with temps on race day in the low 40's and raining. Sounded miserable. Fortunately we woke up race day to cloudy skies but no rain. The temps were low 40's, just about perfect for racing. Race started on time at 10:05 AM. Even though it is chipped, there is no starting mat so everyone gets the same start time. I didn't line up as close as I would have liked, so I had to deal with a little congestion at the start. I estimate it took me 5-10 seconds to get to the start line. Here were my splits: 1: 7:10 (165 HR) 2: 7:09 (176 HR) 3: 7:24 (176 HR) 4: 7:40 (175 HR) - strong breeze to contend with for about .25 mile 5: 7:04 (178 HR) Official finish time: 36:30 All in all, happy with the result. My goal for next year is an ambitious 33 minutes. j. [This message has been edited by jaysoffian (edited Nov-27-2005).]

Good morning!Mike was invited to the Grand Prix banquet. He ran 4 of the 5 races (but not all 5). Does that mean he accrued enough points to place in his age group? He's not a speedy runner, and he's in a competitive age group (male 19-24). There aren't that many of them, but the ones who run are pretty fast. So anyway, we'll be at the "banquet". This week I've realized how not flexible I am (thanks, yoga) and how I've been very slack in not cross training. By adding swimming, yoga, and pilates regularly in the future, I expect to be more fit and less susceptible to injury.

Amy, keep us informed on your cross-training and stretching. I just received a lecture from my doctor about how inflexible I am and I am now trying to do a bit more stretching after my runs. How can I run many miles and then hate to do a little stretching afterward?
