I was worried about you pushing too hard in the beginning. Still I think you did good when you look at your injuries. Going sub-4 is a big milestone.Jay rest and see if you feel better before deciding on Umstead. Bob

Bob,I am shooting for 3:20 in Richmond, but I am afraid that may be pushing my limits. I plan on going for it and hoping my left hamstring does not cramp at mile 20 like it has in the past. My three goals are: Happy - sub 3:29 Very Happy - sub 3:25 Ecstatic - sub 3:20:59 I doubt I will run Umstead again this year. I am hoping to run Boston in April and one spring marathon is enough for me. I enjoyed Umstead, but that the ego takes a beating when you see your finishing time. You know it is a very hilly and tough course, but you still do not like to see such a slow pace ------------------ My Profile

Gottagetfaster, seeing how well you did in the I/O half, I think you will get very close to the 3:20. Umstead Marathon is a very tough race--you can't compare it to other marathons. So your marathon time is unique for that race--which I thought was pretty good.Boston!? Wow that sounds great. On-line registration for Umstead Marathon starts Nov. 11--with a maximum of 200 entries. CCM race report, such that it is:http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum8/HTML/007910.shtml Bob - you'll never convince me to run a hilly marathon again. :-) Seriously, I'm somewhat opposed to running a marathon that isn't certified. It's just too much prep for the time to be unofficial. BTW, I think *all* of my tendons are my achilles. My real achilles and anterior tibial were fine before and after the race. Today it's my illiotibial tendon on my right knee that hurts. That's a first. Not sure if I'll make the Old Reliable this weekend. j. I am looking for a place to run at night in N. Raleigh. I am familiar with the area. Any suggestions would be great.[This message has been edited by nancyd (edited Nov-02-2005).]

Nancy, I would stay away from the Greenways unless you plan on running with a group. There have many too many stories about lone women getting accousted on the greenways. My best suggestion would be to run along some of the better lit roads if they are avaialbe. I run early in the morning and run on my neighborhood streets - whcih are fairly well lit - as well as the main roads - which are very well lit but have traffic.

I was hoping that someone could suggest a track that is open after work that is well lit. I guess I will give it a try in my neighborhood. Thank you for the advice.

Jay, I think your race report reminded me why I love the marathon. Definitely not because it's easy. More because it's the only thing I do that I have a reasonable chance of failure, and when I finish it's a year before I have forgotten enough to sign up for another one. Good race. Take some well-deserved rest!

Not exactly North Raleigh but the track at Buffaloe Rd Park is nice and there are people on the track all the time, mostly walkers so I've always felt safe. Most of the schools around me keep the fences around their tracks locked when school is out.

Due to scheduling, we're running 2 of our mid-week runs at night. It gets dark early around here! This isn't news, but it made the run interesting. I'm very much looking forward to getting headlamps. We have ONE reflective vest for the both of us right now.

Too dark way too early.

Hate the dark evenings, love the sunny mornings. Oh well.Does anyone know how many tracks the various NC state campuses have and if they are open to non-students? They would likely be lighted in the evenings. j.

I'll be running Old Reliable, as will my husband. I'm easy to spot because I nearly always wear a purple bandana on my head. We've already registered, I'll try to find my race number too.

I'll be running the Old Reliable as well. Don't really have a time goal as this is my first race post-marathon. I'll be wearing a purple singlet that says "Running Journal Women's Team" on the front and "We Run the South" on the back.

Online registration closes tomorrow. You can pickup your packet onsite (and register there as well).I'm going to try to bust 45 minutes. We'll see. I'll probably go out too fast and not save enough for the end. j.

I have no way of knowing what to expect from myself. I know that I run better the longer I run. I also know that I'm dealing with some serious shin pain. As in, I don't know if it's simply a really tight right calf potentially with shin splints, or if it's progressed to a stress fracture.I haven't had a good racing fall so far. My 5K times were very far over what I was expecting. I am continually progressing towards being in better shape, but I think that it might be a while before I reap the speed benefits of this. My goal is a 54:00, but at this point I'll be happy with breaking 1:00. Yikes.

Because the Old Reliable is flat, you race times will be better. I have not run the race before, but a friend of mine shaved off two minutes from his normal 10k time. One negative, the temperature will be in the low seventies. I'll be looking for everyone. FYI--if you're running the 10K, just save some energy for mile 5 heading up to the Bell Tower. It's not steep but it's long.
