Jay,Can you use the elipitcal or does that bother your foot? I have used the eliptical several time when I was injured in order to try and maintain the aerobic fitness. Good luck with the foot. ------------------ My Profile

Unfortunately I don't belong to a gym and my community pool is closed for the season. Short of joining a gym, the Y, or buying a stationary bike, I don't have a lot of options. I'm considering that last option though... I already own a treadmill, so I wouldn't get an eliptical. Any thoughts on stationary bike vs rowing machine vs stairclimber as good cross-training equipment for a runner? Anyway, calling to make a doc appt tomorrow. Pain has gotten a bit better with ice, rest, and vitamin I. I was able to run 5 miles tonight in what I would call low-grade pain throughout. Just painful enough to be uncomfortable. Thanks for the good thoughts. We'll see what happens, but at worst, I guess there's always other marathons. j. [This message has been edited by jaysoffian (edited Oct-17-2005).]

I joined Beyond Fitness several years ago just to have access to the treadmills and eliptical's when I am injured. My membership was something like $300 for 3 years and that seemed cheaper than the cost of buying a machine.I tend to use the eliptical when I have impact related injuries and it seems to most closely duplicate the running motion without the pounding. I woud think that either the stair machine or the stationary bike would work better than the rowing machine if your goal was to try and maintain your running fitness. I am only guess this because the rowing machine does not seem to use many of the normal running muscles, but all of the machines should help keep your aerobic fitness up. Good luck with the doctor. ------------------ My Profile

Last January I was confined to a stationary bike due to a stress fracture in my foot. I was training for an April marathon, and I bought a used stationary bike from Play It Again in Greenville, NC for $60. I kept most of my fitness and did run the marathon in (almost) my hoped-for time. I worked up to doing three-hour "long runs" on the stationary bike. It about bored me to death, but the MP3 player helped a lot. Sorry about your injury. I hope you can still do your marathon.

Just got a reminder in the mail about this race, which I ran last year:http://www.wilmingtonroadrunners.org/raceforms/Food06.pdf http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1240713 It was a nice small event. Fast flat course 'cept for the bridge at the very beginning. If you enjoy going to the beach in the offseason, you've got the island to yourself. Hotels very affordable that time of year. Because it's small it's also good opportunity to win an age group award (heck, I came in third place in my age group with a 1:48 half marathon time...). I plan to run it if schedule allows. j.

I live in Apex, and I've been running after work on weeknights. Unfortunately its starting to get dark earlier, so I need a place to run where there are lights. Can anyone give me some suggestions?Lance

The Inside-Out Half is a great race. I ran it last year for the first time and loved it. I am going to the store in a few minutes to register!

Gottagetfaster, very nice to meet you. You did great today. Still bummed with my 1:51 time when my goal was 1:48, and I thought all the cards were right to exceed the goal. The temperature was perfect. I hope everyone met there goal and had fun.Bob

The 1/2 marathon results are in. http://www.runnc.com/results2005/IOHM2005.txtStill bummed about my time. I trying to figure what I might have done wrong. For one, it has been a tough week to get enough sleep. Another would not hydrating properly prior to the race. Better luck next year. Next race Old Reliable Run 10k November 13th--then Umstead marathon in March next year. Bob ------------------ There will come a point in the race, when you alone will need to decide. Bob,It was a pleasure meeting you as well. Not getting enough rest the week of a race will definately hurt your time. Plus, I think the Inside-Out course is a pretty tough course because of the hills in the last 3 miles. If you have done anything wrong in the race or leading up to the race, having an uphill finish will bring out the worst. Good luck at the Old Reliable. ------------------ My Profile

Thanks for the information. When I had 5k left in the race, I realized I needed to run a 26 minute 5k to get under 150. I thought maybe I can do it, but my legs had no energy left. Even today, my quads are very painful.

Marathon #3 this Sunday. Bib #215 for the Cape Cod Marathon.Reposting my training summary from the Race Together Fforum: Was originally confident I could run < 3:40 but had some injuries (both achilles tendon and anterior tibial tendon) during training, so I have three goals: Ultimate: < 3:40 Great: < 3:50 Good: < 4:00 Two previous marathons (4:22 and 4:15) but I didn't train seriously for either of those. Ran a 1/2 marathon in 1:42:29 on 9/4/05. 18mi+ runs: 19, 20, 21.5, 24 (missed a fifth long run due to injury). Average weekly mileage: 30 Total mileage: 507 Plan called for average weekly mileage: 40 Plan called for total mileage: 689 Total weeks: 17 (I'm ignoring the last week of taper). I'm going to go out at 8:30 pace and see how it goes. I'm concerned about running too conservatively the first half since I think it will be very difficult to make up any time in the more challenging second half of this course. All my previous races have been on flat terrain. I was training for this in the hills till I developed the achilles tendon issues about mid-training-cycle and so I haven't run any hills since the start of September. I missed a total of about 20 days of training. For about a third of those I was able to substitute swimming. The other days were complete rest. Wish me luck fellow RTP runners (even though I know luck favors the prepared). Look forward to my race report next week. Hopefully it doesn't include "DNF". Sorry, just some nervous humor there. j.

I wish you luck. I recommend you try a 9 minute pace the first mile and slowly work down to a 8:30. I think you have a bigger chance of burning yourself out early at too fast a pace.Bob

Hey everyone - I've got a question about buying shoes locally. I went through the thread and saw some things back in March but no real consensus. Is there some place you can recommend in Raleigh/Cary? I told myself I wasn't buying new shoes until I finished Couch to 5k but after yesterday (w7d3), I've got to get new shoes ASAP. I blistered my left little toe and also the bottom of my right foot (kind of on the side, the ball of the foot behind the big toe). I have a habit of buying shoes that are great in the store but then I get home and they're awful. Somewhere with a reasonable return policy that doesn't cost a fortune would be preferable. Thanks!

Inside Out Sports has stores both in Raleigh and Cary and has treadmills you can run on to get a feel for the shoe before you buy. You can return shoes as long as you don't run outside on them. Raleigh Running Oufitters in Raleigh also has a very knowledgeable staff. I've never had to return anything I've bought there but the people are quite reasonable.

Great, thank you! It's definitely time for me to get shoes, I think this running thing is going to become a habit.

Jay, are you back yet? I can't wait to read your race report. I tried to look up race results online, but can't find them on the race website. My husband ran the I/O 10K (he's doing all the Grand Prix races) and really had a great time. I was in Ecuador visiting my sister, so I had to miss it. However, I was up at 9000 ft elevation, so I think that actually did have a positive effect running those Umstead hills yesterday! That was exciting. Now we're looking forward to the Old Reliable. Both of us run better the longer we go, so I'm excited. I'm considering the Buffalo Marathon the last weekend in May. Given that I am about mid-range on the fitness scale, do you think this is doable? I will run the Mistletoe Half on Dec 3, my goal is under 2:10. I will have at least 20 weeks to train. Finally, I think Inside/Out is pretty good for shoes, though the Cary store is more geared towards triathletes than strictly runners. And you have to time going to the Raleigh store carefully. I like for the staff to recommend shoes for me, and occassionally I get the guy who wants me to pick out my own shoes. If I knew that, I'd order them online!

Well the 1/2 I/O was exciting, but I failed to meet my goal. I recovered and ran the Wendell 5k Saturday. Here is my race report: http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum13/HTML/004581.shtmlJay, let us know how you did. Bob P.S. Ricmond Marathon in under two weeks. Good luck Gottagetfaster. Are you nervous? P.S.S Umstead Marathon training starts after the Old Reliable 10k.

Bob,Great job on the 5k. I bet that is a more accurate reflection of your fitness than the Inside Out 1/2. I am not really nervous about Richmond. I have a target time that I am shooting for, but my real goal was to get my running partner into Boston in 06. However, he is injured and can run Richmond so I have lost a bit of my incintive. I will give it my best, but a lot of the fun has gone for now. ------------------ My Profile

Really sorry to here about your running partner. Richmond is such a fun race. What is your goal? I look forward to running Richmond again in the future. I hope the weather is in your favor. Marathoning is tough, but you have done well. Is the Umstead Marathon 2006 in your future?Bob P.S. Hey Jay, how about you in the Umstead Marathon!?

Race results here:http://www.capecodmarathon.com/result-05-all.ccml On a whim I bought a Polar RS200sd the Thur before the race. I decided the only way I could hope to run constant effort on such a hilly course was to go by my HR. I decided 155-163 would be a good range since that seemed pretty close to 80% for me. As you can see I was doing pretty good till apparently I hit the wall. My quads just wouldn't work anymore for me no matter what my brain screamed at them to do. Mile: HR / Time 1: 154 / 8:12 2: 161 / 8:16 3: 162 / 8:26 4: 160 / 8:09 5: 160 / 8:14 6: 160 / 8:22 7: 159 / 8:19 8: 158 / 8:34 9: 158 / 8:07 10: 158 / 8:09 11: 159 / 8:34 12: 160 / 8:36 13: 158 / 7:54 14: 158 / 8:10 15: 159 / 8:22 16: 160 / 9:00 17: 158 / 8:28 18: 158 / 9:00 19: 157 / 9:23 20: 155 / 9:32 21: 147 / 10:38 22: 146 / 10:16 23: 142 / 11:07 24: 142 / 10:38 25: 143 / 10:57 26: 142 / 11:12 26.2: 155 / 1:54 3:56:42. The hills in the latter half of the course were killer. The long hill at mile 11 felt easy at the time. Not the 3:40 I was hoping for but still a PR and sub-4. Guess I'll just have to try again. A bit about my strategy. I thought about running a conservative race considering the miles I missed in training due to injury and the difficulty of the second half of the course. But I knew I'd question myself if I ran a 3:45 or 3:50 wondering if I could have hit the 3:40. So I decided to just leave it all out there on the couse and go for the 3:40. If I hit it, swell, if not, I tried my hardest and there are other races. I really thought I could hold that 80% effort the whole course (wasn't sure it would equate to a 3:40, but I wanted to keep the effort constant). That's all I have time for now. I'll write up a full race report later and post a link here when it's up. P.S. the watch rocks but for racing really all you need (IMO) is: heart rate, split time, total time, and a pace-bracelet. I also put the water stops on my pace-bracelet (time and distance) since they were at irregular spots on the course and I'm glad I did so. Bob - Umstead, eh? Uh... no more hills for a while I think. :-)
