I gotta check this thread more often! Liz, check your email! Bobalu Thanks again for the running directions, my friend and I did a 5 mile-ish run early this morning at Umstead, it was great to run on the Bridle trails instead of the hiking trails, my ankles thank you. runamy My work schedule has changed dramatically, I'm only in NC late Wednesday through mid-day on Sunday., if you really think you won't be bored, I'm still game to run with you sometime...

Hey all!OK, so I had too much fun in the Women's 5K on Saturday. Instead of focusing, I spent time looking around and talking to the other women in the race. Thus, my time was not exactly a PR. Oh well, I had a lot of fun! My friend and I went to see my little sister run the XC Festival in Cary. It was so neat! I liked the way they laid out the course, so you could see the start, partway through the 2nd mile, and then the finish. It brought back memories of high school... Plus, my sister had her season PR, so that was good. She's had some trouble with asthma and eating (not as in eating disorder, but in simply not eating enough to fuel her running. Saturday she ate a lot all day long and thus had the stamina), so having a good race was nice. The Second Empire 5K was also fun yesterday! I recognized some of the runners from Sunday mornings at Umstead. I didn't run, but Mike did. His time was just fine. We have run so many long races lately, and this was his first 5K in a year and a half. I think he forgot how to race short! So, we're both looking forward to the Autism 5K to hopefully get some fast times in. Anyone else race this weekend?

Oh yeah.I think we ran faster at night because we'd had all day to wake up, eat, and warm up. Running in the morning is harder because I still have to kind of wake up during the early miles. We ran in the early evening, so it was still light. I prefer morning running, but it added some interest to mix it up a little. You know, alleviate some boredom. Jen! We'll run 3 or 6 miles on Saturdays, and normally run long Sunday mornings. Do you still run on Sunday mornings, or are you preparing to leave town?

Anyone know what was going on in Cary yesterday morning off Black Creek Greenway? Looked like a triathalon maybe but I hadn't heard of anything. BTW - newbie Raleigh runner. I'm just starting week 3 of the Couch to 5k program. Thought I'd say hello, I've probably been passed by a few of you as I wheeze and gasp and stumble along.

srogan, good to have you!I don't have any info on the race in question, but wanted to welcome you to the Raleigh forum, and congratulate you on your new (?) hobby. Do you have a race picked out to run soon?

Thanks for the welcome, runramy. It's sort of a new hobby. I've been working out hard at the gym since March and tried running then but without a real 'plan', I got frustrated and used the hot temps as an excuse to stop. Twice a week, I'm still inside on the treadmill but we went to Lake Johnson last weekend and Black Creek yesterday (we live near NC State and RBC Center). My husband runs a lot more than I do although he's been kind of 'off' this year after running a half at Kiawah last year. His running partner just left the area so I'm trying to at least get myself at a point where I can run a couple of miles with him from time to time. I was going to run the Turkey Trot 5k in Apex on Nov 19 but I've turned a little sour on it - I'd really rather run something that benefits some sort of charity but I can't seem to find anything in that timeframe. I'm open to suggestions though!

The inaugural Autism Ribbon Run was my first race so it has a special place in my heart. I love that course. It's the same as the Run for the Oaks in the spring. It's the same day as the Chicago Marathon.I ran the 2nd Empire yesterday as well. Those towels were the best post-race idea I've ever seen.

My achilles acted up again this weekend sort of suddenly. I finished my 10 okay on Saturday, but I cancelled my 20 miler on Sunday after 2.5 miles. It's still a bit sore. I'm going to take the week off and if it doesn't improve, go see a podiatrist. But I had already promised my daughter that she could run the Second Empire kids dash. So I put both my kids in their first "race". They loved it. I keep telling my daugther that she "earned" the medal rather than having "won" it, but she's not buying it. Kids. :-) j.

Jay, I think your kids are so cute. And for what it's worth, you're very smart to both lead by example and get them started early. One reason I run is because my dad's a triathlete. First, he's inspiring. Second, he's supportive. Third, I have to be able to keep up with him. ------------------ Baby's Got a Brand New Blog

Where did everyone go? Are you injured or uninspired?Any exciting weekend runs planned? I just have a 3 miler tomorrow and a 6 miler Sunday. My shins hurt like the dickens though. Actually, it's not the shin per se, it's the tight calf muscle and where it attaches to the shin on the inside of my leg. I am not totally convinced my orthopedist did my orthotics correctly to fix MY problem. That and I don't stretch enough. I try, but I forget a lot.

I'm still lurking around. I'm running day 3 of week 3 tonight instead of tomorrow morning. I work with a trainer on Thursday nights (weights, etc) and we had to move last night's appt to tomorrow morning during my running time. I'm hoping the cool temps today make for a decent outside run this evening. I wanted to ask (but didn't want to be an annoying newbie) about the Old Reliable Run in Nov. Anyone have any thoughts on this as my first 5k? I don't love that it's out on the street but I'm not sure how big of a deal that is. I was wondering about hills, shade, and crowds mostly.

Hi all, I posted once last year, then forgot about this place...I wish I hadn't, I see lots of traffic since then.I also ran the Second Empire (won my age group and went under 18:00 for the first time since high school, so I was really happy - 18:00 had been this year's goal for the 5k). I have to say, I agree wholeheartedly with the poster who praised the post-race towel handout - that was fantastic (and given the unseasonably warm weather of late, even more welcome than it might have been). I still think, if you're running a race in late September, do it at 9 AM, not at 2 PM - this is North Carolina, not North Dakota. But that was a fun race and a nice course. That hill in the second mile is deceptive, ugh. I'm still running in SW Durham - I wish I weren't too lazy to wade through all the posts this year, but I am...anyone else down this way? My next races are the Inside-Out (probably the 10k, but maybe I'll get froggy and do the 1/2 - I've never raced one before) and the Old Reliable, I think - I've never run either before. One race I'd heartily recommend, in case noone else has mentioned it, is the UNC Run for the Kids - it's a 5k on the UNC cross country course - so it's on trails, not roads. They ran it in early September this year, and it fired on all cylinders - fun, scenic course, relaxed atmosphere, good race support. One thing that was neat was seeing the kids' run afterwards - the UNC mens' X-C team disbursed through the field, running with the kids and cheering them along as they went. I thought that was a really nice touch. It's definitely one I'd recommend to anyone, especially novice runners looking for a good time or anyone who welcomes a change of pace from racing on blacktop all the time. The Old Reliable 10K is my all-time favorite race. It has a great course through downtown and up until last year, it was a "real race" that attracted a lot of talent. Then the race got sold and it's now a charity run like all the others. I hope the competitive spirit of the race won't be lost in that. Being an afternoon race it has been pretty warm a few times even in November.

Geez:http://www.nbc17.com/news/5014074/detail.html Flasher Seen On Cary Greenway POSTED: 6:40 pm EDT September 23, 2005 UPDATED: 8:30 pm EDT September 23, 2005 CARY, N.C. -- Cary police are warning residents who use the Black Creek Greenway to use caution after a flasher was seen in the area several times in recent weeks. The man has been spotted four times in the past month, walking out of the wooded area and onto the trail, where he stands as people walk by, police said. The man appears between 5 a.m. and noon, and the only distinguishing feature reported is that the man has no hair on his body, police said. "He's completely naked. On one occasion, he's been seen with a biker's helmet on and a pair of sunglasses, and on other occasions, he's been seen with a basic hat on, and it's pulled down really down low," said Detective Brisco Gasperson, of the Cary Police Department. Gasperson said anyone using the trail should walk with at least one friend for improved safety and should refrain from using headphones to be more aware of what's going on. Karen Robinson and Mary Doherty often walk on Black Creek Greenway because of its natural beauty and relaxing atmosphere. They said they don't plan to change their exercise routine because of the flasher, and Robinson said she has a way to capture him if he crosses their path. "I would definitely snap a picture to have proof," she said. Anyone with information about the flasher is asked to call the Cary Police Department.

Glad to see everyone is doing well. I know Perchcreek is a Durham runner. If he is not keeping up with this post, go to the Boomer page and respond to a daily post he is in.Anyone running Chicago (I know Perchcreek is running this)? My stomach problems have cleared up enough to start to move my mileage back up. I am entering the Inside-Outside Cary/Umstead 1/2 marathon and have been training for this for two months. I was worried I was going to miss it, but I feel strong now. Gottagetfaster, hope the marathon training miles have not ground you down too much. Starting to see some interesting wildlife on the American Tobacco Trail in the swamp area: Blue Herons and Egrets. Bob,Glad to hear that your stomach issues have resolved. I also hope to run the Inside Out 1/2 marathon, but I have not yet signed up. So far my marathon training is going well. My only complaint is that my long run partner is injured, so I have running my long runs alone and will not have company in Richmond. Other than that, the miles just keep on going.

Hi all you Raleigh runners! I'll be visiting your pleasant city for Thanksgiving and want to know if there are any races going on that week? Want to work up the appetite for the big feast! Thanks!

dapadge - The only one I know of off the top of my head is a 5k in Apex on the 19th. It's definitely not a 'race' so much as a run/walk. There's a 5k in Greensboro on the 24th. This link might help: http://www.ncroadrunners.org/NCRCRaceTable.html

I'm more concerned about the logistics of the crowd. I feel well-trained but don't think I have much hope of getting a decent time as I am in the open corral. I'm running with a team so it should be really fun.

I will be curious to see how you like the race compared to your other races. I ran MCM a few years ago and I did not enjoy the crowds. I have thought about trying to run Chicago or maybe NY, but the crowds just seem to mean that the race would be a fun run instead of an attempt at a PR.------------------ My Profile

dapadge, I liked the Turkey Trot in Raleigh on Wade Ave (InsideOut Sports) last year. It's an 8K and the course has some really good hills. It was sort of emotional too, as it was the first race following my first marathon, and it was on part of my 20 mile course training run. Ah, the memories. So, I'm looking forward to the Autism 5K tomorrow. No promises on time. I've been feeling kind of under the weather this week, taking shots and typhoid vaccine to prepare for travel to South America. I don't think I'm sick, but I feel tired. Anyway, I'll be the mid-pack girl runner with the purple bandana on. Maybe a visor too if it's raining. Hopefully midpack if I can focus!
