I know I skipped at least 3 miles a week on the training plan, and I do believe that cost me a lot. DH uses the same plan to run with me, and he was great through 10 miles and then crashed and burned during the last 5K.I just felt like I ran out of gas.
Sounds like some longer long runs will help with that. FWIW, here's what my 1/2 marathon and marathon racing history looks like (I'm leaving out a half dozen or so 10 and 12k races): 01/26/03: 1:56:54 (Home Depot 1/2 Marathon) 10/26/03: 2:02:50 (Jungle Run 1/2 Marathon) 12/07/03: 4:22:22 (California International Marathon) 02/01/04: 2:00:10 (Home Depot 1/2 Marathon) 01/08/05: 1:48:12 (Ocean Isle Beach 1/2 Marathon) 01/30/05: 4:15:42 (Miami Tropical Marathon) 09/04/05: 1:42:29 (RnR 1/2 Marathon) I used Hal Higdon's Novice program for the first half marathon. This was after I had been running for about 6 months. I think my goal was 2 hours. The Jungle Run was a "tune-up" race as part of my training for the CIM. I used HH's Novice program for that as well. My goal for the CIM was 4:20. I ran the second Home Depot 1/2 on basically zero training ... took most of Dec/Jan off for recovery. I think a calf cramp at the end of that one slowed me down. The OIB was a tune-up for the Miami Tropical. I don't recall which HH program I used for the MTM but my goal was 4 hours. It was probably the Novice program again. Unfortunately I took all of December off from training and only got in a single 20 mile long run. I probably shouldn't have run the MTM at all but my excellent results in the OIB convinced me I could do it. I finished with a PR but went out way too fast (went out at 9 minute pace but ended up walking lots of the last 8 miles...). I chalk up my good results in the OIB to the marathon training I was doing for the MTM. Right now I'm doing the HH Advanced I training program for the Cape Cod. My goal time had been 4 hours, but I've since revised it to 3:45 and I'm considering revising it again to 3:36 (8:15 pace). Clearly all the speed training has really helped my pace. The last few weeks I haven't followed the HH Advanced I to the letter, subbing in equivalent swimming time for the short days (e.g, instead of running 4 miles, I swim for 40 minutes). I did this due to my previously mentioned achillles issues. I think this will give me the extra rest I need w/o compromising fitness. One week before the RnR I completed a 20 mile long run on Sunday which followed a 10 mile run the day before. I then took the rest of the week off. I ran an easy 6.5 miles the day before the RnR. But even with that I still faded a bit that last 2 miles. I chalk this up to two things: 1) going out a little fast. 2) heat. During all of this I've steadily (but slowly) lost weight. I was almost 190 before I started running. I'm 155 now. I'd like to be no more than 150 on race day in October. I do most of my training on a treadmill. Weekend runs are at Umstead/ATT as weather allows. I wont run outside anymore with the dew point over 70, though thankfully it looks like we don't have to worry about that anymore this year. As long as I'm sharing, I may as well throw down the gauntlet. I set a goal about 18 months ago to qualify for the Boston before I'm 40. I turn 34 this Dec 24th. I now think I can qualify for the 07 Boston by running a 3:15:59 qualifying race sometime next year. If I am able to do that, my next goal will be to run a sub-3 marathon. After that, I think I'll be pretty durn happy to just maintain my fitness level, though a few co-workers have been trying to convince me to do an olympic distance triathlon. :-) Anywho ... I'm not sure any of that will be a help to you at all, but I was in a sharing mood. :-) j.

oh boy, I've got lots to respond to here!bobalu thanks for the directions! swatkins The rationale was that it was pretty desolate. If I got seriously hurt, it could be a long while before I could find help or help could find me. emlennon Good to hear from you, I know Sara very well! I'll be at State tomorrow with Kathy D. from anesthesia to interview. VSH is miserable I quit about 2 weeks ago..long story! runamy You are not too fast for me., my most reliable pace is right at about 10 minutes, so my long runs are a bit slower than that, I'm too slow for you! Thanks for the offer, but I think you'd be bored, bored, bored with me. I actually did my last long run at the ATT in New Hill with a friend, that place is sooo great. The only downfall I can see is the lack of potties! Thanks again for all your responses. The positive, friendly attitude "in here" is one of the things I love about my new home in NC. Great days and runs to all.

I am happy to report my instincts about my headache medication were right. I have dced the medicine and I have had 2 consecutive fabulous long runs. Last week I did 24 (I was scheduled to do 22 but felt so good I ran an extra 2 miles). Today I did my shorter long run of 13 miles and again felt great. I can even run up the big hills on the North Turkey Creek Trail and the Bridle Trail without an issue. One more long run till the marathon October 9. Woo hoo!

Swatkins, congratulations on figuring out your meds. It sounds like you had a great run. I am still waiting for the first time that I feel so good after 22 miles that I throw in a couple of extra miles. You have my respect.------------------ My Profile

Hi Jen,Sorry to hear about VSH. How did your interview go at the vet school? Good, I hope! I was actually kind of thinking about doing an externship at VSH at the end of this semester, mostly for the convenience of it. Would you recommend that I look for someplace else? If you'd rather not write in a public place about some of the details, you can email me at emlennon@yahoo.com Thanks! Liz

Does anyone know anything about the Grand Prix series? I have heard it's really good and lots of fun. However, I don't feel like I'm very competitive. Can those of us who run because we like it still get something out of the series? (I mean, besides all the cool races)

Here is some information about the Grand Prix series: http://www.runraleigh.com/rules.htmlI cannot fit all the races into my schedule. Also, I'm not a fast runner, so I would not be competitive. Still, it sounds like fun. Bob [This message has been edited by RunBobaluRun (edited Sep-16-2005).]

Hey, I just moved to Cary this summer so I don't know much about the grand prix series. I did find this website though. http://www.second-empire.com/race/According to the website, you need to run at least 3 of the 5 races. But if you do run all 5, only your top 4 scores count. I won't be able to run all 5 races and I am not very fast, but I think the series sounds like great fun!

I think Mike and I will do it. I'll miss the half mary because I'll be out of the country, but I know we wanted to do it last year. Too bad we didn't learn about it until November!

I'm going to try to do the first four. None of them really fit into my training schedule, so I probably won't run any of them at race pace.I ran the Old Reliable last year and I can recommend it. It's a pretty nice course, was well organized, and last year at least, had ideal weather. My daughter (4 yrs old) wants to run the 5K Classic with me. That's a bit much for her, so I'll have her do either the 100 yard kids dash or the 1 mi fun run instead. :-) j.

Bob,Just saw you this morning on Ready Creek crossing over the bridge that goes over Crabtree Creek. I said hello but I don't know if you recognized me. Oh well. :-) Anyways, this morning I decided I'd park outside Umstead and run into it which is something I've been meaning to do for a while. Normally I park at the Harrison entrace and I'm getting just a little tired of ending my runs going up Reedy Creek Lake Road (wouldn't be too bad if I wasn't always finishing my runs in the morning sun since that part of the trail is not well shaded). My intent was to park on Dynasty and run north on the Black Creek Greenway. However, even though I saw the trailhead, I saw no obvious places to park. Seems it's all apartment complex lots that all have signage indicating they tow. I'm not sure where along Dynasty one can park. So I drove up to North Cary Park and parked there instead. This is actually a terrific place to access Umstead from. A run starting at North Cary Park, going north on the greenway onto Ready Creek trail all the way to East Gate and back is just a bit over 13 miles (13.3 maybe), most of which is well shaded. And it finishes more or less downhill once you round the airport lookout. This was perfect for my 12 miler today (okay, so I put in a little extra). North Cary Park has plenty of parking, clean restrooms, and even an outdoor shower. For my 20 miler next week, I may try parking farther south on the Black Creek Greenway at Godbold Park instead. I'm not sure when the portion of the greenway south of Dynasty opened but I guess it's in the last year or two. That should add an extra couple miles or so. I hope everyone had a successful run today. j.

Hey all! My weekend running was fabulous! I got some new shoes, which is always fun. Saturday was a moseying 3 miler, and Sunday was a good, hard 6 miler at Umstead. Definitely my best run in the last month. I had to do some sports psych on myself, though. I've been disgruntled about my performance, and getting onto myself about my slow pace. I was questioning whether I can really consider myself a "runner" since I run so slow! Then I started thinking about my dad. My dad only trains about a minute per mile faster than I do, but he's a really good triathlete. I realized that I compare my training and racing times against the runners I know - usually male, and normally in a very competitive age bracket (the 25-50 range). For a woman my age, I do OK! I just need to hang out with more female runners. That's my thought for the day - If you insist on comparing yourself against other runners, be careful who those other runners are!

Hi Jay. I recognized you when you said hello, but was suffering from a stomach problem that was in the process of ruining my scheduled 15 mile run. I had to walk and jog back to the car on Trenton Road. Sorry I wasn't nicer. I'm going to the Doctor this afternoon to see if it is an Ulcer.Bob [This message has been edited by RunBobaluRun (edited Sep-19-2005).]

Okay, so the Second Empire 5k is this weekend at 2:00 PM.I wanted to see if I could run it sub-21 minutes. Except, here's what my week looks like: M: 4 T: 10 W: 5 T: 7 x hill F: rest S: 10 (marathon pace) S: 22 I'm not seeing anyway I can run the 5k as anything but a fun run. Sigh. I got spoiled living in CA. Seemed like there was a 5 or 10k every weekend. Races are a bit scarce around here in comparison. :-( j.

That looks like a pretty tough week even without the 5k. Running the 10 miles at MP the day before the 22 is impressive. You go! ------------------ My Profile

That looks interesting, but I have an all day Church meeting, so I will have to miss it. By the way, does anyone have any suggestions for a slight (hopefully) groin strain? I am icing it and taking the NASIDs and I have taken a couple of days off from running. Any other wise words of advice? ------------------ My Profile

So, how are you feeling? That sounds painful and annoying. Oh, if anyone hasn't already picked a race for this weekend (nothing like waiting til the last minute, eh?), there is always the Women's 5K. It is in Cary, to benefit Interact. Interact is an awesome organization. Info at www.ncroadrunners.org. Otherwise, see you at the races! It's a total running weekend for me, running tomorrow morning, then cheering on my sister at the xc festival, then cheering on Mike at the Sunday afternoon race. I think I won't run it, but maybe at the last minute I'll change my mind... One other thing - last night Mike and I were both wound up from long days at work. Most of the time we run in the morning but had skipped yesterday. Last night's 5 miler was at least at 9:15 pace! Sweet!

Amy,Great job on the evening run. Do you think running at night instead of the morning helped your pace? I also run in the mornings and I know that my pace increases when I run during the daylight and can actually see the road. But, I am guessing there was not a lot of daylight for you at night huh?
