swatkins, very sorry to here about this. You did the right thing. I can only hope these people are stopped before an awful thing happens.

Gottagetfaster, preliminary diagnoses is not stomach bug, but kidney stones. I will have the answer this afternoon since I just finished a Cat Scan. I can barley walk, and I am in terrible pain. I'll miss the 12k Umstead run today. Hope to be better next week.

Kidney stones!? Yikes. Good luck with that. I would say to take it easy, but I am thinking that is not easy to do right now.

It was about 8PM by the time I was finishing my run. What is so scary is that these guys were just so bold. I can't say scary because I never actually felt scared. I felt enraged. All I thought was "you motherfu@@ers are NOT going to rape me!"

"P.S. Will I see anyone at the 12k race sponsored by Inside-Outside sports and Roadrunners club in Umstead Thursday night at 6:30 PM?
"

I was there. Did the 12k. Took me 1:16, I finished second to last. How depressing. At least I found someone to keep me company on the climb back up North Turkey Creek, though I didn't get her name.

I've never run the north part of the park before. N Turkey Creek is a pain in the #$%. I didn't realize how much going down it took out of my legs till I turned around. Oh, and I missed the turn-around so I went all the way to EC road.

I did some speedwork on Tuesday as well. So those are my excuses. :-)

I think I'd better spend some more time on NTC though.

Glad you made the 12k in Umstead. Was there a good turnout?

Isn't Turkey Creek something. If it helps any, that trail gets a bit easier the more you run it, but it has not gotten easy for me yet.

The turnout was probably 35 people or so. No more than half that (in fact, maybe only a dozen or so it seemed) ran the 12k, the rest only ran the 5k (I wondered why so many folks were moving so fast on Graylyn).

The folks who did run the 12k were pretty serious runners ... some of them were really booking.

I'll be in CA next week so I won't make the Aug 11 10k. I should be able to make the Aug 18 and Aug 25 runs, but I'll have to alter my training schedule a bit.

I'm also thinking about showing up at one of Sir Walter's HHH runs in the near future. Never done one before and it sounds like fun. :-)

Cheers,

j.

Boy I wish I was there at the 12k. I was so looking forward to it. jaysoffian, you did great. Anyone not experienced with North Turkey Creek Trail or Hell Trail or if you running it round trip Hell and Back Trail, should be commended on getting through it.

I have had some very trying days. My stomach virus turned into kidney stones. I had a 9mm stone lodged in the left kidney that couldn't get out. Found my self in Day Surgery yesterday and believe it or not they couldn't find the kidney stone to laser it. They think I may have passed it while I was waiting in the hospital (seven hours), but I think a 9mm stone would made some impression on me traveling through the narrow regions. Anyway it is hard to explain the pain I have been in the last three days before the surgery, and I can walk slooowly now. I have a stint in me that comes out Monday. If the Cat Scan Monday says all OK, I'm going to work back to a walk/bike/run program.

I would love to go to the 10k in Umstead. If I can run again without damaging myself, I'm going to do it even if its last place.

Bob

P.S.
swatkins, I hope you can find a place to run that you feel safe. These men need to be shot!

P.S.S. If four men described similarly to what swatkins gave us are found shot to death later, please don't have the police see me.

I teach in Wake County and live near Crabtree Valley Mall...With school starting up, it's my goal to run in the mornings....however, I'd really like to meet up with someone to run! I need to be done with my run at 6:30am in order to get ready for work...I would like to run 7-8 miles each morning...and I run about 7min./miles...is there anyone with this same sort of schedule that would want to meet out that way around 5:30am???

Does anyone know if there is going to be a North Carolina 10 mile race again this year? It was in Sanford last year in Sept or Oct I think.
Thanks!!

I live in the same arean and run at about the same time - but not usually at your pace. My fartlek pace tends to be closer to 8:00 with my tempo pace being closer to 7:00 and my recovery pace closer to 8:30 or 9:00. So, I am thinking that you are a bit too fast for me (that sounds better than I am too slow!)

Where do you run your daily runs? I tend to run a lot along Creedmoor Rd - which is not too bad at that time of the day.

Did you let law enforcement know? It sounds like this was planned in advance, and is very scary. The police and sheriff department NEED to know. You won't sound paranoid or silly.

It would be good to let them know so they are aware. It isn't the first time something's happened at Shelley Lake, is it? We need to make sure that someone isn't hurt in the future.

The only 10-miler I know near here is the Army ten-miler in Ft. Bragg in June. Here is a link to the results:
http://www.fortbraggmwr.com/sportsrec/intramurals/10milerresults.htm

Another web site for looking up races is:
http://roguerunners.org/AreaRaces.htm

Good luck on your search.

Bob

P.S. Try the Inside-Outside sports/Umstead 1/2 marathon in late October.

Does anyone know the accuracy of the greenways in Cary? I swear, my time said 6.5, but the markers said 6.1. I don't think I was super fast, but that seemed excessive.

Sorry, but I have no idea. My long run partner uses the greenway markers around Shelly Lake and he thinks they are accurate.

Hey, take the increase in speed and gloat for a while.

Oh, according to the markers, I would have been running an 11-12 minute pace, when I'm normally at least 10:00 or under. (hey, I never claimed to be fast!) My concern was that my pace seemed to vary from 12:00 to 10:00. I was more consistent than that!

Oh, sorry. I thought the markers were shorter than expected any your pace was correspondingly faster. If your pace is slower, then heck yea those markers need to be check and adjusted!

Jay, sub 24 in the Umstead 5k! Go for it! I'm looking for 26:30 or better. The hills and heat are tough. Though it seems we will have a bit of break in the heat next week.

Ran 10 miles on the American Tobacco Trail this morning and about died! Hope all of you survived the weekend.

Ya know what sucks? When you misread the Umstead trail map and accidentally run 19 miles instead of the 17 your schedule called for. Doh.

Started at 6:15 AM and it was already 80 degrees. Was 90 degrees when I was done. Have no idea what the humidity was, but it had to be 70% at least. I managed 10 minute miles for the first half of the run, but I got beat down to 12 minute miles for the second half.

And I'm running shirtless from now on. My "technical" shirt was soaked in the first two miles so I carried it the rest of the way.

My route btw was was reedy creek entrance (park was gated so I parked outside and walked to the start of the trail) to east gate. east gate to west gate with a detour up graylyn to graylyn gate and back, west gate back to east gate (detour up to graylyn gate and back again), then back reedy creek to the reedy creek entrance.

This weather is just miserable. Next week I've got an off-week so it's only a 12-mile long run on Sunday, but if things don't improve by the following week, I'm going to do my long runs on my treadmill. Thankfully football season will have started by then so I've got something to watch while running for three hours. :-)

See ya Thur Bob!

Jay you should have done your 17 (19) miler next weekend and settled for 12 yesterday. The weather will be much better then. I feel for yaa. Doing ten on a flat course in this heat about had me in the hospital with heat exhaustion.

I ran a 12 miler at Umstead yesterday. My shorts were soaked with sweat by the time I was done, and I felt really bad for the people running behind me. I could feel the sweat flicking off, gross!

Anyway, you mentioned humidity - I checked the weather channel prior to my 5:45 am start and it was 94% humidity!

Oh yeah, this was my earliest start and I forgot it would still be dark! Running in the woods in the dark is kind of fun.

I have learned, don't pay attention to the humidity as a percentage, pay attention to the dew point. The dew point when you ran was 66. 66 is humid, but not bad. Here is my feeling on the dew point for comfort:

65-69 warm, but doable
70-72 hot and uncomfortable
73-75 extremely hot and uncomfortable
76+ forget it

It was 75-76 dew point both mornings this weekend.

Here is a great link for wather history:
