OK, I'll bite.

Technically, it is trespassing to be on any property at a Wake County School facility if you haven't reserved it and "paid" a fee for it (I know, we're both taxpayers and "paid" already, but I'm just relaying info). I only know it is trespassing because it periodically comes up in the news or in the paper, as someone either gets a ticket or complains to the news media when asked to leave. Just be aware that it's illegal.

That being said, folks do it all the time. The rule doesn't seem to be broadly enforced.

My daughter practices soccer "legally" and the neighborhood folks are running around the track during practice (at a middle school). As long as no one is interfering in our team's practice, I don't see what difference it makes. However, just last week I received an email about a football coach running a camp (it just so happens, at Reedy Creek Middle), who was pissed that he paid alot of money for the football field, which is bordered by the track, and the girls soccer team (my daughter's team) ran 3 laps around the track (per the coach's instructions) for warmup before practice. We all thought it was silly, as the football team wasn't using the track, but...it just depends.

I run at an elementary school track in the early morning and no one has ever bothered me (I've been doing it for 6 years). I believe the chances of someone "catching me" in this illegal activity is greatly reduced before 5 am. You are risking some, though, if you show up later in the day while a camp is in progress or a team is practicing.

FYI, the nc roadrunner's club runs at the NC State track with a coach on hand every week on Tuesday for free. See this page for details... http://www.ncroadrunners.org/

Gottagetfaster, 9.4 Sunday in Umstead done at moderate pace had my heart rate jumping to keep the body cool. I have noticed a significant drop off in the biting flies! I think that is the hottest run have done this year. You must really have the miles cranked up getting ready for your marathon.

bianchilvr, thanks for the update. Good information.

Good afternoon!

Thanks for the tips on track running. It had been about 6 years since I'd done anything on the track, so I feel like I've forgotten all the rules.

We did go yesterday (Tuesday). The gate was open, and we run in the morning. There were 4-6 walkers on the track, and then 5 people doing a different interval workout. I thought everyone was REALLY nice. The other runners, faster than me definitely, were encouraging as they finished their interval and I kept going. I'm not used to that! And walkers kept to the outside, speedsters on the inside.

6 miles Sunday am at Umstead. I thought the heat and humidity were terrible! I had more problems with that run than the 8 miler the week before. This week is 9, hope it cools off!

runramy, glad to hear that the tracksters were nice folks. I am always glad to hear confirmation that runners and walkers are nice to each other.

Good luck in Umstead.

I did about 12 on Sunday and agree the bug situation is much improved. I go about 8:30. All the rabid runners are deep in the woods by the time I start and the dog walkers haven't gotten up and out of bed yet.

So you let all of the "rabid" runners soak up the flies before you start running? Very smart!

Oh yeah, we used Deep Woods Off prior to running Sunday. Flies totally ignored us, even after sweating for an hour. And it wasn't just laziness on their part, I saw them target other runners on the trail.

I hope to see some of you at the race tomorrow morning in Fayetteville--Running of the Bulls 10k. My goal is to break 50--a PR.

But with this heat and the hills, I feel like Rocky did before his match when he realized that he couldn't win:
Rocky: Ah come on, Adrian, it's true. I was nobody. But that don't matter either, you know? 'Cause I was thinkin', it really don't matter if I lose this fight. It really don't matter if this guy opens my head, either. 'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood.

But I'll put up a fight to get that 50-:
Apollo's Trainer: He doesn't know it's supposed to be a show! He thinks it's a damn fight!

Rabid runner=anyone who runs more than me. Kind of like drivers--anyone who drives slower than me is a moron and anyone who drives faster than me is a maniac.

You must have inspired something, though. I have never seen so many runners at Umstead on a Sunday morning! It must have been the nice weather.

I was happy with my run, 9 mi at a consistent pace. I won't tell you what the pace was, but it was great for me. I never slowed down at all, which I don't think I've ever done over the course of 9 miles.

And great run for the Fayetteville 10K! You sound satisfied with the run - good job!

runramy, maybe I saw you Sunday morning. I ran 9.4 in Umstead at a slow pace and you were right about the number of people out! Great to see all the runners!

Did you see where they connected the South Turkey Creek trail to the old road bed making the loop between North and South Turkey Creek trail official?

I hope to see all you out for the Inside-Out/NCRC Umstead Series Thursday nights in August starting August 4th.

I hope to see some of you in Umstead Sunday morning. I'm going to do a 17 miler pretty slow so I guess I'll be out there for awhile.

Gottagetfaster, how has your training been going. I see your doing a twenty this weekend--good luck. Do you have your goal time for Richmond yet? What program are you following?

Bob,

Take it easy on the long run in Umstead.

I am shooting for 3:20 at Richmond. I ran 3:29 last year, so this is going to be a stretch for me. I am trying to follow the Pfitzinger 24/70 plan with some modifications. Due to time constraints, I cannot get in weekday runs longer than 12 miles. I am running my tempo runs and long runs at the paces that are recommended for me to run to complete Richmond in 3:20, so we will see.

How is your training going? If you are running 17 in Umstead you seem to be doing well. I tend to run Umstead on off weekends where we can stop after 14 or 15 miles. Those hills (mountains) can really take it out of you.

I have been running Umstead twice a week for my 10k training, but not any more than 9.4. I have done a few 10.7 tempo runs on the American Tobacco Trail.

With the wife out of town, I'm going to do a real long slow run Sunday morning and not worry about getting home anytime soon. If I go slow, I'll get through the 17 miles OK, plus it will be one of the coolest days this summer.

I'm on the fence with Richmond. Was thinking about starting up Pftiznger's 18/55 program, but was also looking at the FIRST program. If I do Richmond, I would like to break the four hour mark. I'll take this weekend to make a decision.

Bob

P.S. You look like your doing great in your training, especially considering July being the hottest July on record.

Well I decided to not do Richmond since I don't have the motovation. I'll do a 5k, half and 10k race this fall. Then I'll get ready for Umstead Marathon over the winter.

Good luck to you Gottagetfaster!

I ran 14 at Umstead this Sunday (training for the Cape Cod Marathon Oct 30). I didn't start my run till about 10:30 AM though. I always intend to get out early but never seem to... didn't really matter much today with the cloud cover though.

The weather was really nice. I had given up on Umstead back around May when the bugs were driving me nuts and had been running the American Tobacco Trail instead... Umstead really is much nicer though. No bugs today.

I've been staying off the hiking trails and run the bridle trails instead... I seem to be prone to twisting my ankle whenever I run hiking trails while training for a marthon.

Seems like enough of us run Umstead on Sundays that we should be bumping into each other. :-)

Bob,

Sorry that you won't be in Richmond, but it sounds like you have a busy race schedule coming up. My only suggestion with Umstead is to take your predicted marathon finish time and add 30 minutes. I enjoyed running it this past March, but I was a bit too aggressive with my goal time and really paid for it the last 2 or 3 miles. Crashing is one thing, but crashing and still having large hills to walk is just the pits.

Good luck with the training.

jaysoffian, I may have seen you. I started at 8:15 and my run went over three hours. I was the one that looked like he was about to keel over.

Gottagetfaster, if I remember correctly, you got ill the week or two before the Umstead race it effected your training. You may not have been 100% at race time. I think you'll exceed your goal in Richmond.

My goal for Umstead is to have a better than 10 minute pace (4:22). With seven months to prepare, I'll be in good shape.

Bob

P.S. Will I see anyone at the 12k race sponsored by Inside-Outside sports and Roadrunners club in Umstead Thursday night at 6:30 PM?

Hey everybody,

7 miles Sunday am at Umstead. I missed y'all though, as we started at 6:30 am. It was raining for the first 15 minutes then quit. What's up with that? I was looking forward to the cooling rain.

I'm glad to hear other people think the hills can be tough. I run the B&B Trail by Reedy Creek. There is one hill that I'm the master of, but one hill that kicks my butt every time. The best I've done is call it a draw, I can't claim victory yet. Is it a problem I personify the hills?!

Gottagetfaster, thanks for the advice. I'm not sure why I'm having trouble with recovery, but I am running slow to get back. Hope to be 90%+ for Thursday race in Umstead.

I have numbered the dips in North Turkey Creek so I can keep account of where I am on the trail. I'm always amazed when I look up at those hills from these dips.

FYI female runners, I narrowly avoided getting gang-baged out at Shelley Lake the other night. I never run out there alone anymore but I needed to do some pace work for marathon training and it is so tedious on the track, and since the trail is marked by the quarter mile, I always thought it was a good place for me to practice running an even pace.

I was running counter-clockwise and was at about the mile mark when a Hispanic guy in his 20's passed me and brushed up aginst me as he did so. This was totally unnecessary as there wasn't anyone coming the other direction. I realized as he was just ahead of me, there was another guy kind of next to me and 1 or 2 behind me. I am a 43 year old woman and not a particularly fast one and seemed odd they would be running my pace (plus they weren't dressed right) so I stopped and pretended like there was something was wrong with my shoe and waited until all of them were around the corner and I turned around and headed back the other direction. As I got close to the boathouse I saw them again. They got their heads together and one went up into the bushes and the other two headed towards me. I looked behind me and a ways back was a woman walking so I pretended like I knew her and asked her to walk with me because I knew they wouldn't grab me if there were 2 of us together. I have never been so angry. I will never run out there again.

Holy Cow! That is really scary! I always that that running around the lake itself was pretty safe due to there usually being people around.

What time were you out there?

I have suggested to my wife that she might want to walk/jog around the lake, but I will not be making that suggestion anymore.

It sounds like you reacted perfectly and avoided a potentially very bad situation. Great job of being aware of what was going on around you.
