I'm out in Oceanside, sitting out the LI Marathon this year, just coming off injuries. I've run the 1/2 4 times, was hoping to run it this year now that they changed part of the course, but, I'm not ready for it.

Suzanne - There is a new club in Rockville Ctr I'm getting involved with. Check out Greater Long Island RRC,

I run on Long Island!

I just came home from school though, and I'm finding running around my town horrendous... Any good suggestions for places to run on the South Shore where there aren't cars everywhere?

Haven't checked this thread in a while but glad to see there are some LI Runners out there

irishan-There isnt a spot on the road that is car-free, check out Bethpage Park or Heckser they have trails, I just wish the South SHore had more hills, the only hills if you want to call them that are on /off ramps on Sunrise Hgwy.

Logjam0913 / RobinTara-I was thinking about joinng them or the Massapequa Road Runners, I met a woman at one of my 5k's that said they meet every 2nd tuesday of the month and have all sorts of activiites, I really do want to join a club to meet runners, nobody that I know runs, and not to many on the road at 5:00 am around Lindenhurst

ANy of you doing the Mini 10K on June 12 in the City?

i know south nassau pretty well and there are some great places to run. long beach has some great areas, there is a large park in baldwin harbor that makes a great run. also check out south freeport, near wooddcleft ave and s. Long beach ave. tough to find a nicer place to run on a sunny day. the traffic isnt as ruthless if you go south of atlantic ave.

This is nice that there are some LI'ers on CR, we should start a LI Thread on here so we can keep up with good running spots and such, eager to check out the new running store, the only one I know aboutis Runners Edge in Farmingdale, great store though.
I too plasn on running Cow Harbor 10K, I just was going through my race calendar to fill up July and August, looking for a half at the end of summer or fall and cant find one.

A running store in RVC? Landmarks?

Yeah, I've been running from my house to Baldwin Park, Silver Lake area, South Nassau Hospital etc. Avoiding cars is pretty much impossible without having to jump in my car and head out to Eisenhower. I guess I could run to Oceanside Park too when my endurance gets better. I just hate the obnoxious drivers who honk and leer at you. I think I should move my running up to 5am and avoid it entirely.

its called rockville centre running company. its on the eastbound side of sunrise just east of north village ave. i think you would park behind it in that big lot on merrick. (ive only been there with my poland spring truck so i double park). its right near that big dance studio - lets dance or legs dance..something like that. good store and nice guy so i buy my stuff from him.

Good morning all LI'er's

Rockville Center Running Co - is on Sunrise Hwy just east of S. Village Ave, south side of the street.

I've been running around the Oceanside, Island Park, Long Beach area for years. Run the LB Boardwalk is a lot of fun. I've done many an early morning weekend run, down LB Road to the Boardwalk without any worries about the cars.

How about everybody sign up for the Firecracker 4k in Long Beach (it's on the boardwalk a lot of fun).

Sanch123 - you gotta do Cow Harbor, it's a great race, but, tough, you need to do your hill training -

South shore = No Hills, I am thinking I need to head over to the North SHore for a couple Sundays and hunt for some hills, for know hill training is on my TM.
Firecracker 4K sounds great to me - When is it?
Everyone else up for this race?

Yeah, I'd be interested in the 4K - my dad has been doing C25K so that might be a good race for us to do together :)

I've been a lazy runner lately, actually getting a race to do might make me get out there again. Unfortunately I just started work for the summer (teaching swimming to little kids) and now have all sorts of really long days... meaning this college student is going to have to drag her butt out of bed early to run, since mom doesn't like it when I run at night. Hm, should be interesting, I'll keep you all updated.

Also, I know where you're talking about on Sunrise, I'll have to go check it out - do you know if it's open on Sundays?

I've been posting & reading on CR for about 2 years now. Glad to see some more Long Islanders beginning to post also. If you don't know, a good series of races that are held here on L I is the Summer Series that rotate among various state parks on every Monday night. They begin June 14th and run (pun) for 8 straight weeks. If you need more info, I'll post again.

The Fireckracker 4k is on July 4th, on the boardwalk in Long Beach

The LI Summer Series is also a nice bunch of races.

Yo Lawnguyland, wassup? FugginA, I used to live on the Island! Moved to Vermont in 1990. I lived everywhere down there... Levittown, Dix Hills, East Islip, C.W. Post, Fort Salonga, Rocky Point, Wading River. I used to run all over the roads in Wading River and do beach runs on the north shore with the defunct nuke plant as my backdrop. No offense, but I'm so happy to be out of there. Went back last December for a funeral and man is it crowded!

Have you ever been to Carl Hart bicycles in Middle Island (and is it still there)? I worked there for eight years. Is there still a triathlon in Montauk? I did it way back in 1984. I never was much of a runner back then. Slogged through the L.I. 1/2 marathon in 88 degrees in 1984 also. Aren't the big races down there the Cow Harbor and Shelter Island 10k's? And there's a 50 miler across the island, right?
