i have stumbled upon running over the past few months and plan to run my first half-marathon in indy. however, i would love input on columbus running.

1) where are some great places to run around columbus?

2) what are some good races, in all ranges, besides the marathon?

thanks!

A great place to run in Columbus is along Olentangy River from Wilson Bridge Road in Worthington all the way south past OSU. The path also connects Antrim Lake, and the Park of Roses. They are two of my favorite places in Columbus. Here is a Cols. Parks and Rec. link:

Columbus Trails Directory

HighBanks and Sharon Woods are also nice places to run as well. If I want a serious workout I take 23 North to HighBanks. It’s just about the only place in Columbus with Hills. I run from the back of the park all the way to an Observation Deck overlooking the Olentangy River 110 feet below. Talk about a view! (It took a while to figure out which way to go without a map though. Hint..Just take a right at every trail you come to.) Sharon Woods is an easy 3.8 mile loop. (no way to get lost!) Lots of Pine Trees, and every now and then you will spot a Deer along the way. Here is a link with all the Columbus Metro Park Locations.:

Columbus Metro Park Locations

I would have to say Premier Sports is without a doubt the best organized race promoter in Columbus. I have known Jeff for years, and he does an excellent job. He usually has about two dozen races a year ranging from 5K’s to Half Marathons. Here is his site:

Premier Sports

As long as the weather is nice Columbus is a great place to run.

PS. I ran Indy two years ago. That is a very cool lap around the Brick Yard! Good luck!

I live about 30 minutes southeast of Columbus in Lancaster. I usually run down here, but am in Columbus quite abit and may try some of the parks to run in. Thanks for the links, Blacksheep.

If you ever venture about 30 minutes down 33, you will find lots of hills!!! You don't even have to go all the way to hocking hills. Chestnut ridge is actually a Columbus metro park, but in Fairfield County. There is a nice 2 mile loop there with a long, killer hill. there is a lookout where on a clear day you can see the Columbus skyline. You get there by turning right off of 33 at Carroll eastern road. The park is about 3-4 miles off of 33.

Hocking hills has a fun trail run in September- The Indian Run. I ran it last year- it was hard with all the hills, but fun! They have several distances- 5K, 10K, 20K and 60K.

Marcy

Oh- check out the runohio.com website also, they have a calendar of Ohio races.

Hi,

I'm a kind of newbie runner in Columbus. I ran last year up to about May, just after the Race for the Cure, then had to stop b/c of physical problems but starting back up. It was good to see other Columbus runners.

Good to see another central ohioan! I usually run in Lancaster, but am considering a job change to Columbus. If I take the job in Columbus, I'll have to stake out some running spots!

Yesterday was a great day to run! A ran a five mile loop around my house in Fairfield county righ around dusk and it felt great! With kids activities, spring break, and work travel I had to do I had lost some ground on weekly mileage, but I'm back to normal now... Just in time for the spring weather!

You just missed a fantastic race this past weekend. Make sure you put this one on your calendar for next year. It is the ecothon at The Wilds in Cumberland, Ohio. They have a 5k and 10k run and a 5k walk. T-shirt, goodies after the races, all the hills you can possibly run, and a free safari tour after the race.

I saw that run at The Wilds and considered doing it--- But the little one had a soccer game at the same time.... I would be in big trouble if I missed a game. Glad it was a good race. Maybe I'll get a chance next year.
Probably the first race I'll do will be the run in Lancaster on Memorial Day weekend- I think they call it the rooster run. Anyway, I need to find out more info on it.

Anyone going to the Scioto in Prospect on the 24th of May?

I've never been there but it sounds like it will be a very scenic event.

Well I completed marathon # 3 today
(26.2 miles). I did the Cincinnati Flying Pig
Marathon. I did a time of 3:47:34. I went out a head
of my pace group for the first 20 miles, and I
actually stayed 2 minutes under the pace that I wanted
to get, so I was really happy with that. But at mile
20 I hit something called the "WALL". In a marathon
the "WALL" is basically when your body shuts down, and
you just want to stop. But being the determined person
I am I kept going, and tried to hold back the pain,
but I did have to stop and walk for a few mins, but as
I hit mile 21, to my suprise was my friend Domnique
who got me throught the last 5 miles, if it were not
for her I would of probably stopped and walked more.
Thanks Dom !!I was pretty dehydrated by the end of the
race, and really looking foward to seeing the finish
line in view!! All in all it was a great marathon, the
Flying Pig is always a fun one to run.

Well if anyone would like to see my time broken down
to different miles splits you can go to the following

Hey,

I'm starting the Marathon -in-training program this week. Anyone else thinking of doing this? And the Park of Roses is my all time favorite place to run. Add Antrim Park on to that. . .ahhhhh. Isn't spring just such a great time to run in Columbus? I love running in Victorian Village too. My goal is someday the Flying Pig, mainly because the name is just way too cool. How can you NOT run something called the Flying Pig? Anyone running the Race for the Cure on May 17?

Any of you running the Columbus 10K? There is also a little memorial day 5K here in Lancaster I'm gathering info on. Looks like about 130 people ran it last year.

The 2nd annual Columbus Citizen's Journal 10k was my first road race. The year was 1979 and I had just completed 8th grade. My parents had a graduation to go to, so they drove me the 50 miles to the race and dropped me off, promising to pick me up later in the day.

I ran the 880 in track because the mile seemed like too long a race. I did well and had decided to run cross country in high school. A few roadraces in the summer could help me get used to running the longer distances.

I started training on my own and was soon able to complete a 4.3 mile loop without much problem. When race day arrived, I was just hoping I could complete the run without stopping. The race was great and I completed the 10k in 42:20.

After the race (or before) Dave Wottle, the 1972 800m champ, was there to give a talk wearing his famous hat. At the awards ceremony, I readied myself to accept one of the age group awards, though I did not know where I had placed. When the announcer said "In 6th place in the 14 and under age group with a time of 39 minutes and ...", I thought to myself they must have made a mistake. There is no way that 6 other runners my age had run under 40 minutes. That must be the winners time and they inverted the order. "In 5th place with a time of 38 minutes and ..." I realized I had a long way to go to be as good as the other runners my age. I was still happy that I had ran the whole race and was hooked from that point on.

Later in the day was a couple hours away. I walked across the river to look around and stumbled upon a little art thing with a few tables set up and the artists exhibiting their work. Is that the same art festival that takes over all of downtown columbus for a weekend now???

Great story! Yeah that's the same arts festival- In ' 79 I was 16 and just about ready to start my short high school running career! I ran cross country for Delaware Hayes my junior year. It was my one and only try at a competitive sports team. I was not real fast, but did place 10th in the OCC and got to the regional meet (where I got creamed!). I was going to run the next year (and be captain) but got the lead in the fall play and my first love at the time (acting) got priority!
Funny thing is, even tho I only ran that one year, the experience made me confident I could run and enjoy it! And I have run for fitness on and off since then. But have been running consistently for about a year now-

Central Ohio was well represented at the ogden newspapers 20k in Wheeling WV. Formerly the Elby's distance classic. This race should be the benchmark of all others. Having your name called on the loudspeaker as you are coming down the final hill to finish. Results posted shortly after the race. Free pizza and drinks. An awards banquet with a great chicken dinner. Meeting Bill Rodgers after the race. It was worth running up a hill for over a mile and a half in the middle of the race.

I guess I'm an Ohio honoree.

My first marathon was the Flying Pig in 2000
Did the 4 person relay in 2001
Ran Columbus marathon in the fall of 2001.
Did a St. Pat 5K in the winter of 2002 in Columbus (outside of Dublin OH).
Ran a 2 person relay in Cincy spring 2002.
Have a friend that lives in Columbus, and manage to get a few others to run the marathon last fall.

Columbus has some great places to run and a great running store in Front Runner.

djc1225, Great report. I missed free pizza and a chicken dinner?! If you liked the 20k in Wheeling, you should check out the WV Ridge Runner Marathon held in North Bend State Park Cairo, WV. It's June 7th, and they also have a 10-mile race as well.

I am already planning on running the marathon there. I should be ready. In the last month I ran the ecothon 10k (hilly ,trail, grass), the pittsburgh marathon (challenging), the hocking hills half marathon (6 1/2 miles grueling hills), and the ogden 20k (hardest 20k in america). Fortunately, this weekend I am planning on the flat zoar 5 mile.

djc1225, At about the 24-25 mile mark just before you enter North Bend State Park you have to climb a hill that makes Steel Hill in Hocking Hills look like a speed bump. It's HUGE!!!Also be careful going down hill at about the 26 mile mark. The park road is VERY steep, and it may be slick. Good luck. It's a great challenge, and a great marathon. The scenery is awesome!

Which hill was Steel Hill? The last one? The three major hills at Hocking were very steep but not real long. I had to laugh when I got to the top of the 2nd hill and they had a water stop right at the summit. I was breathing so hard I couldn't imagine drinking any water without stopping. At the Ogden 20k, the hill at mile 3 was at least 1 1/2 miles long.

I saw in the comments a couple remarks about the steepness of the downhill at the end of the Ridge marathon. I try to find a berm on the side of the road if there is one. It is usually a little softer.
