Park-O: Danehy Park
Thursday, April 17, 2014, 6:00 pm
Park-O is orienteering. Basically, show up in a park and get a map. But not a normal map: it won’t have any street names. Or squares. Just road and building outlines, and if it’s hilly, maybe contour lines.
When you hear “GO!”, look at your map. There will be a bunch of locations on the map (these are called controls) and you visit them in the order they are numbered. How do you get from one to the next? Your choice. Orienteering is based on route choice and the way that you go may be different that someone else.
Go to your controls as fast as you can. It’s a race, but you have to use your head. The winner gets, well, nothing more than the satisfaction of running faster and/or smarter than everyone else.
(Orienteering is running through the woods—usually—with a map and compass finding your way through a set of points by reading the map and terrain. In Street-O, we drop the compass and add the city. Experience it like you never have before.)
