Aflac Iron Girl National Series--Going the Distance, 2010

Okay, women; this series is spreading throughout the country. This series is for you! Although it's called Iron "Girl," it includes women of all ages. An Iron Girl is a woman who balances fun and femininity with strength and determination to achieve something incredible. Since the original two races in 2004, participants from 5 to 89 have crossed the finish line of Iron Girl events. But reaching that finish line is only the beginning. On the contrary, that's where the journey actually begins.

Participation in any one of 11 Iron Girl events in 2010--starting with a new 15K--will help women of all ages push themselves a little bit further.

More than 17,000 women participated in 10 Aflac Iron Girl events nationwide last year--covering over 150 miles of swimming, biking and running. There is strength in numbers and the series is hitting numbers that can't be ignored.

Since 2004 Iron Girl has allowed thousands of women to continue their journey to a healthy lifestyle. As the series continues to grow each year, participants can up the ante on their own fitness levels, setting their sights on longer distance races or broadening their horizons to multi-sport events in the months ahead. And many plan to travel to new and exciting destinations to participate in as many events as possible; 2010 races range in distances from 5K to 15K road races; and duathlons and triathlons add variation.

"It's not over once you finish one race; it's about continuing this fitness lifestyle forever and setting new goals," said Judy Molnar, vice president of Iron Girl.

It is for beginners and experienced athletes; it may be the first race or it may be another season for veterans. It does not matter. The series is structured with new athletes in mind, giving them the opportunity to grow in their personal fitness. These beliefs are also beautifully symbolized in the Iron Girl "Grace" emblem, representing each woman's ability to power through challenges and overcome obstacles--while maintaining a positive sense of self.

The Aflac Iron Girl Event Series includes 11 events that crisscross the U.S.--giving tens of thousands of women a chance to get involved. Get out a map and a calendar. It's going to be a busy year. Visit AflacIronGirl.com and start planning your journey today.

The Great Bay Half Marathon

This is the half marathon for you--rural roads along the shore of the famous Great Bay estuary on April 11. There is a walking division, and they have added the Inspiration 5K so everyone can participate. The 4th annual Great Bay Half Marathon and Inspiration 5K will run in Newmarket, New Hampshire with 10% less hills and a downtown finish on Main Street.

There are many reasons to run, enjoy, and appreciate this outstanding race offered by Loco Running. It's a beautiful course, with a quaint New England mill town, ancient stone walls; the gorgeous coastline of Great Bay, forests, farms and fields, and so more. It's a mostly rural course. The first eight miles are challenging with rolling hills, but it's terrifically picturesque with views of Great Bay Estuary. There will be different musical groups set up along the course. This race is both scenic and well managed.

Both races start at 11:00 a.m. (walkers at 10:00). Both are USATF-certified with chip-timing using the Chronotrack D-Tag. Custom medals will be awarded to all registered finishers.

Plan to visit the Health and Fitness Expo Presented by Exeter Hospital on Saturday, April 10 at the Newmarket High School gym (with registration and pick-up), noon to 5:00 p.m. (about 40 different booths, health, fitness and running).

It's part of the "Gone Loco, Will Run for Beer Series"--this is the second of six races on or near the New Hampshire seacoast. Run five of six races and get a great series jacket. The post race party at the Stone Church will also feature a beer tasting courtesy of Smuttynose. The Great Bay Half Marathon gives you double points in the series. Check out all the details and register at the website.

New Bedford Half Marathon

The 33rd annual New Bedford Half Marathon is the second of seven races of the USATF- New England Grand Prix, running March 21, 2010. It is one of New England's premier Half Marathons and continues to be a memorable racing tradition year after year.

The New Bedford Half Marathon was alive and well long before half marathons became so popular. It's set in a vibrant seaport city that embraces the race and welcomes runners as friends. Add top notch organization and amenities, along with a fast loop course through the heart of New Bedford, rich in seafaring history, and you have the makings of a classic New England race with a long list of esteemed runners.

It's a fast, certified counter-clockwise loop. Ingrid Kristiansen (Norway) holds the women's record (1:08:32, 1989)--then a world record. Geoff Smith (Great Britain) set the men's record (1:02:05, 1986).

There are cash awards for individuals and USATF teams. Their excellent website has details and you can also get full information on registration/packet pick up, club/team information, course maps, D-tag chip system, and more.

The City of New Bedford is one of the world's most famous whaling era seaports and the number one fishing port in America. This wonderfully diverse city is a culturally rich community with a proud past. The city's national park status and authentic working waterfront add to its appeal. It was the inspiration behind Herman Melville's Moby Dick.

The Half Marathon is hosted by The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick, New Bedford Irish-American cultural organization, which is very active in the community. They do a great job with this event! Run it and see for yourself.
