THE NATIONAL MARATHON TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER
NEW AMERICAN RECORD IN MILE On July 21 three-time U.S. 1,500m champion Alan Webb broke the American record in the mile, clocking 3:46.91 at the Atletiek Vlaanderen meet in Brasschaa, Belgium. The mark broke the record of 3:47.69 set by National Track & Field Hall of Famer Steve Scott in 1982 and makes Webb the eighth-fastest man in history, behind Hicham El Guerrouj, Noah Ngeny, Noureddine Morceli, Steve Cram, Daniel Komen, Venuste Niyongabo and Said Aouita. > Meet Recap; Scott's reaction to Webb breaking his record ANNUAL REPORT RunningUSA has compiled its annual report on the sport of running, and the trends, as usual, show that the sport is continuing to grow. In addition to a section on the overall running industry, statistics are also given on U.S. runner demographics, growth trends in road races, and the largest races. PAULA RADCLIFFE UPDATE Reigning World Marathon champion Paula Radcliffe has confirmed she is planning to return to competition in the fall. Radcliffe, the World Marathon record holder, who with a storming performance was the only Briton to win an individual medal in Helsinki two years ago, is itching to get back into racing action. NYC HALF-MARATHON Haile Gebrselassie, the double Olympic gold medalist and multiple record-holder from Ethiopia, won the second annual NYC Half-Marathon Presented by NIKE, clocking 59 minutes, 24 seconds, the second-fastest time half-marathon time ever on North American soil. It wasn't easy though, as USA 10K and 10,000 meter champion Abdi Abdirahman and defending Boston Marathon and LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon champ Robert K. Cheruiyot pushed the pace in the early miles. Kenyan Hilda Kibet triumphed for the women, edging her countrywoman and the defending champ, Catherine Ndereba, by one second. > NYC Half-Marathon Race Recap HEALTH AND FITNESS A landmark study from the University of Calgary's Running Injury Clinic suggests bad knees have been getting a bum rap. While most running injuries happen in the knees and lower legs, it turns out their root cause is almost always weak hip muscles. The surprising news come from an investigation by Reed Ferber, who runs the clinic and is a professor with the university's faculties of kinesiology and nursing. Ferber was stunned to discover that of 284 patients who visited his clinic complaining of leg pain over a period of seven months, 92 per cent had weak hip muscles. > Study on the cause of bad knees BEACH TO BEACON 10K Duncan Kibet out kicked a fast field to win the men's crown and Luminita Talpos dominated the women's race in the special 10th edition of the TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race on Saturday in Cape Elizabeth. Kibet of Kenya (27:51.7), perhaps the hottest road racer in the world right now, earned the victory by passing three competitors in the final 600 meters, while Talpos (32:20) of Romania jumped out to a big lead about two kilometers in and never looked back. > Beach to Beacon 10K Race Recap BR SPORTSWEAR BR Sportswear is going out of business after 21 years, and this is your chance to cash in on some terrific deals on running apparel.
