Team Hole in the Wall is off to a great start in 2013 with team members running the Boston Marathon and other events in support of now famous The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and its programs. You can be a part of this exciting new season—new team look and logo—by running the Fairfield Half Marathon in Fairfield, Connecticut on June 23, 2013. The 5K runs on June 22. This will be the 33rd running of the Fairfield Half Marathon (the 5K started in 1995). Team Hole in the Wall will celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. You can be part of it and make your running—every stride—mean so much more and help a vitally important cause. Both body and spirit feel good when running as part of this team, which has lots of options for runners (and walkers) of every ability.
If you register now you can secure your spot in this soon-to-be-sold-out happening in Fairfield, the sea-side town on Long Island Sound just west of Bridgeport in the Nutmeg State (and just off Interstate 95). The Fairfield Half Marathon has a new course that is flatter and faster than before, and even more scenic with miles along the Southport and Westport coastline. The course includes stately mansions, famous bridges of Fairfield County, and picturesque beaches and shore views. Team Hole in the Wall is the signature charity partner for the Stratton-Faxon Fairfield Road Races.
The races are easy to get to on Interstate 95 or by taking the Metro-North train or Amtrak to Fairfield. Team Hole in the Wall members get a private bag check to make it even more convenient.
Team Hole in the Wall is the Camp’s grassroots fundraising program and online community from far and wide. Team members participate in selected team athletic events, mostly road races and bike rides, or host other events to support the camp’s mission. Some athletes who are distant or have scheduling conflicts bring their efforts, team perks, and their sense of camaraderie and accomplishment to other events in many locations.
Team members running Fairfield (or any of the events) will receive:
Free race entry (and guaranteed entry)
Personal fund raising page
Name listed on Website as fundraiser
Team fundraising Facebook app
Custom dri-fit Hole in the Wall team jersey (new design)
Private pre-race bag check (very convenient)
Team Trainer access (and coaching if in the Fairfield area or digitally)
Fundraising tools, advice and support
The fantastic feeling of teamwork and camaraderie associated with this group.
Team Hole in the Wall has raised over $10 million in support of Paul Newman’s vision since it was established in 2006—so this is also the 7th year for the TEAM. There are currently 2,300 team members and you can be one of them. Please visit teamholinthewall.org for registration and more details.
Team members running the half marathon pledge to raise $500, and those running the 5K raise $250. Those already entered can also be part of the team and help with lesser donations but receive many of the team perks.
Incidentally, Newman’s Own provides a portion (less than 2%) of the Camp's operating funds but supports hundreds of other charities as well. It takes over $2,500 to underwrite each child’s camp experience and it is free of charge for all campers, an amazing program. The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp relies heavily on the support of individuals and teams to keep Camp going and growing.

Fairfield Road Races
The Fairfield Road Races are hosted by the Fairfield Firefighters, sponsored by Stratton-Faxon Law with Signature Charity Partner Team Hole in the Wall. They will run on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23. Both run from Jennings Beach, 850 Benson Road, Fairfield, CT 06824. The 5K, limited to 1,500 participants, will start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, and the Half Marathon, limited to 4,500, will blast off at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2013. Both will sell out. Both will be timed using the Chronotrack B-tag system, the best there is, with the timing chip built into the bib number. The bib number and chip do not have to be returned, but can be kept as a souvenir.
The Half Marathon has been highly rated by Runner’s World and selected by Active.com as one of the top ten summer destination races in the USA. Many Olympians have competed there and they regularly have a field of international stars, women and men, with significant cash prize money on the line. When you run this one, you will be running the same race on the same course at the same time as some of the best in the world! In what other sport is that possible? Be a part of it with Team Hole in the Wall.
Both races include lovely courses with the half marathon an especially scenic course with miles along the shore and through many of Fairfield’s picturesque and historic neighborhoods. Fairfield Beach and the offshore Penfield Reef Lighthouse are unique, and Fairfield is filled with historic structures, even though it was burned by the British during the Revolution.
The HM course/event records are 1:12:06 for women set by Elaine Van Blunk; and 1:02:39 for men, set by John Yuda of Tanzania. Last year’s winners were Milika Mejdoub of Morocco (1:17:47) and Tesfaye Girma of Ethiopia (1:05:37).
The Camp and the Mission
The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp was founded by Paul Newman in 1988 to help provide any child with a serious medical condition a chance to experience the transformational spirit and friendships that go hand in hand with camp, where they would be both cared for and accepted by staff and peers. It is a place where every kid can experience “a different kind of healing” that comes from the fun, friendships and spirit of childhood that the Camp community celebrates.
Camp is located in Ashford, Connecticut, on a 344-acre wonderland in the midst of a rural region of Connecticut’s “quiet corner”, surrounded by the Natchaug State Forest and nestled among ponds and farmlands largely unchanged from colonial times. The primary mission is to ensure that every child with a serious medical condition can experience the world of possibilities that camp has to offer, The signature “Summer Program” consists of eight week-long sessions for kids 7 to 15.
Other programs, however, are also provided such as “Hero’s Journey”, a course of personal challenges for teens 16 to 18 whose lives have been touched by chronic or life-threatening illness. Additional programs include weekend retreats, which are held fall through spring, for families and care-givers; weekend programs for parents, and more. Their “Hospital Outreach Program”, established in 2002, serves the entire Northeast with the spirit of the camp for those unable to leave medical facilities. It provides joy and laughter and an improved quality of life where illness has brought uncertainty.
The Hole in the Wall Camp and programs currently serve more than 20,000 children and families coping with serious illness each year.
Any Race, Any Place
Runners who are already registered for the Fairfield Half Marathon are joining Team Hole in the Wall to dedicate their run to something more. This provides added incentive for all those training miles and the big push on race day. Soon there will be no bib numbers available otherwise for 2013, but you can apply for the 2013 team. And there are still numbers available through Team Hole in the Wall for the ING New York Marathon and several other high profile events (including Boston 2014). As a member of the Team you are treated with the respect you deserve, including recognition—on race day and online.
But you can also form your own team and/or choose any race, or simply dedicate your individual effort to the cause in any race from 5K to Ultra, marathon, relay, trail, mountain, triathlon, duathlon, or other event. Yes, the next race you run—any race--could help fund campers at The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. Join the team and the fundraising program and compete as an individual or as part of an official team while supporting Paul Newman’s mission to improve the quality of life for many kids and families struggling with serious, life threatening illness.
Through the Team Hole in the Wall program, you can run with the established team, form your own team, or simply run your own individual race and dedicate the effort to this vital program. You set your own goals and pace by choosing your racing event and establishing your own fundraising targets, with Team Hole in the Wall providing support every step of the way.
