Smart runners know that there's more to racing than gutting it out to the finish line. Racing takes both planning and discipline -- the second part is up to you, but we can at least help with the planning.

Good race planning means setting a realistic goal time for the race, setting an appropriate target pace, and then sticking to it. New and intermediate racers will often get the best results by sticking to an even, sustainable pace throughout the race.

Use this calculator to determine your target split times for your marathon or race, and then stick to those times during the race -- especially at the beginning when you may be tempted to go out too fast.

Happy racing!
