Racing in Wine Country anyone? This Marathon and Half Marathon are very different, and have a distinct appeal--distance running in scenic Sonoma in morning sunshine surrounded by vineyards, wineries and farms is very enticing. Running miles on a delightful bike path becomes incrementally more appealing than standard distance races. And where better than historic Santa Rosa where winemaking is the “engine” of the region and the weather is generally ideal? You will experience a beautiful sunrise over the vineyards and bordering trees in the cool Northern California Pacific mists that make the wine—and your marathon—so deliciously wonderful! And it is a great Boston qualifier, in the top 10 of Boston qualifiers in fact.

The countdown to the 6th Santa Rosa Marathon Presented by DeLoach Vineyards has begun! You’ll find no better opportunity for a wonderful running get-away! The Half Marathon and 5K races are unique competitions in their own right, and all three are very flat, inviting you to a PR. The scenery is absolutely stunning with start and finish adjacent to the beautiful Juilliard Park on wide open Santa Rosa Avenue. Participants have great views of the city heading west overlooking Sonoma’s Russian River Valley vineyards, as they run the Prince Memorial Greenway in both directions. Miles through the vineyards and past small wineries are highlighted by a quick run through a DeLoach Vineyards barrel room around mile 9.

There are excellent descriptions of the course mile by mile on the Race Website, so we won’t duplicate that here. But some of the highlights include the Prince Memorial Greenway, trestle bridges and aquatic birds, DeLoach Vineyards, of course, but also smaller wineries; a dairy farm, a horse farm, pastures and fields. There are more vineyards than you can count, including those of Martinelli and Korbel; some very lovely residential areas, and the course reverses along the Greenway, which looks totally different as the sun rises higher on the return.

The Half Marathon also enjoys a beautiful course, including the Prince Memorial Greenway, and half marathoners receive the same schwag and amenities as the full marathon. Visit the Website for specific information on everything you need to know for plans and preparations: http://www.thesantarosamarathon.com/

Santa Rosa, History and Charm
There’s no place like Santa Rosa, and the marathon course explores much of it. However, treat yourself as you also explore this fascinating city prior to race day—and thereafter. It has a rich history and the charm is palpable as you enjoy different sections of town. Santa Rosa is only about an hour (55 miles) north of the Golden Gate Bridge, but sometimes seems to be a world away.

Thousands of years of Native American history strode lightly over this region with many tribes at peace. The Spanish, English and Russian Empire vied for control and ownership of this area for decades. It was a Spanish province until Mexican independence in 1823, and all of California was part of Mexico until the Mexican-American War beginning in 1846. The United States took control after the war ended in 1848. One year later gold was discovered and the rush was on, bringing many people and a lot of change. California was admitted as the 31st state in the Union in 1850.

Santa Rosa reflects this rich history, including the game-changing arrival of the railroads in the 1860’s, though the town was also dramatically altered by the devastating earthquake of 1906.

There is much to see and do in Santa Rosa and Sonoma generally (Santa Rosa is the county seat and largest city in Sonoma County). The California Indian Museum and Cultural Center, Luther Burbank Home and Gardens, Pacific Coast Air Museum, Annadel State Park, historic Hotel La Rose (1907), Railroad Square, Sonoma County Museum, Redwood Empire Ice Arena (Snoopy’s home ice), and the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, just to name a few. Schulz spent much of his life in Santa Rosa and his offices were there. He had great influence on the town and vice versa. Natalie Wood and Robert Ripley were also from Santa Rosa, among many others.

Sonoma County has more than 250 wineries. There are over 7.5 million tourists each year. But none of them can enjoy the exquisite scenery and unique views experienced by race participants.

"Pretty town, beautiful course; flat and a good Boston qualifier; loved the pancakes and there was lots of food and wine and beer. I’ll be back.” Traci Joy of Oakland (3:39)

Great Endorsements
Traci Joy of Oakland ran a Boston qualifier (3:39:24) last year, and had only praise for the organizers and commendations for the entire experience: “The Expo was awesome and so much fun because it was a unique outside setting. Race morning I enjoyed a beautiful sunrise over the trees and vineyards off my right along the bike path. There was a feeling of camaraderie you don’t get with larger races--enjoyable, comfortable. Amenities were impressive. You don’t usually see that much schwag for everyone. The race was really high end and well organized. And the post-race was absolutely great—loved the pancakes and there was lots of food and wine and beer. Pretty town, beautiful course; flat and a good Boston qualifier. I’ll be back.”

"The best part for me was the pace groups. I was with the 3:45 group for the first 21 and the pacer was amazing." Liane Pancoast, Massachusetts (3:55)

Liane Pancoast of Westford, Massachusetts went to Santa Rosa to capture a Boston qualifying time. She needed a 4:10 for her 55-59 age group, and she ran a comfortable 3:55:53. "Even before the event I got a lot of helpful information from their e-mails, and I 'Liked' them on Facebook which helped even more," she said. "The course was scenic and flat-just a few small rolls early on. The best part for me was the pace group. I was with the 3:45 group for the first 21 and the pacer was amazing. The group was very supportive of each other," she continued. "I liked the Finisher's Red wine, the nice jacket, large medal. Running through the DeLoach barrel barn added to the uniqueness of the course."

Pancoast made it a family outing as her daughter, Stephanie Pancoast, ran the 5K and led for most of the race. She was the first woman and narrowly missed the overall win when a guy kicked it in at the finish.

The Expo is Unique
This race has a very special and unique Expo, set in the outdoor guest area of DeLoach Vineyards. The expo runs Friday the 22nd (1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) and Saturday the 23rd (10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.); it is pool side—a lovely and relaxing spot--and all participants can taste wines for free. Many vendors and race-related organizations will be participating, and the Expo is free to the public—demos, samples, speakers, and information.

DeLoach Vineyards is set on 20 idyllic acres in the Russian River Valley. Their vineyards are organic and they also have organic and biodynamic gardens. They have wonderful tasting rooms, picnic grounds, and have an impressive array of artisanal cheeses, and more. DeLoach Vineyards is located at 1791 Olivet Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95401: http://www.deloachvineyards.com or 707-526-9111.

If you are running the half marathon or marathon you MUST pick up your race packet and jacket in advance. There will be NO race day pick-up or registration, except for the 5K. The Marathon (6:00 a.m.), Half Marathon (6:30) and 5K (7:15 a.m.) all run on Sunday morning, August 24, 2014.

Sunrise and Weather
Averages August 24 show a high of 83, low of 53 and mean of 68—ideal for running, because much of the course will be completed before the temperature rises much above 65. Sometimes there is a light fog, but it lifts quickly and often adds to the unique beauty of the course. The sun rises at 6:33 that day, so runners will experience an amazing sunrise, a treat in itself. Sunset is 7:52 p.m.

Special VIP Package
Ever want to race and be treated like an elite guest? This is your opportunity! There are a very limited number of openings available—to keep it very special, of course. But you can have this “fast track add-on” VIP treatment, which includes: Express packet pick-up, no lines, Commemorative 6th anniversary T-shirt (special design), Commemorative bottle of wine (different than the finisher’s reward), transportation to and from Juilliard Park from select hotels, express bag check (in and out), 15-minute massage, private pre-race waiting area and porto-lets, beverages, fruit and bagels, express pancake line, separate post race amenities, and more.

Post Race and Juilliard Park
The starting line is about 30 feet from the finish line—it’s all right there. Juilliard Park is a gorgeous 8.8 acres located at 227 Santa Rosa Avenue. It was the family estate, gardens and orchards of the Charles F. Juilliard Family (his brother Augustus established and endowed the Juilliard School of Music in New York). The estate was donated to the city by a son, Frederick, and includes music venues, picnic grounds, playgrounds, bocce courts, community gardens, and a farmers’ market. It is an ideal race venue with plenty of room to stretch and relax before and after the event.

And the post race Festival is fantastic—full pancake breakfast with juice and coffee; lots of food, kids’ games and inflatables, beer and wine garden for all participants 21 or over, and lots of live music. It’s a post race celebration and party. Yes, beer—the beer festival features over a dozen craft beers in addition to fabulous wines. There are two great craft breweries right in town: Russian River Brewing Company and Moonlight Brewing Company.

Don’t Wait, Don’t Procrastinate
There is a wealth of information on the Race Website on everything associated with the event and the area: Registration, travel and accommodations, training plans and groups, getting to the venue, pacers, rules, post race, dinner, charities, sponsorship, the Expo and number pick-up, spectator information, volunteer opportunities, RRCA, photos, results, merchandise, gear check, traffic, courses, awards, results, FAQ’s and so much more.
