Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Ethiopia’s World 10,000m silver medallist Berhane Adere will attempt her own world indoor 3000m record at the Sparkassen Cup - IAAF indoor permit meeting - in Stuttgart, Germany on 4 February 2006.
The 32-year-old, who was 2003 World Indoor 3000m champion, set the current World record of 8:29.15 at the same German meeting on 3 February 2002.
Adere, whose list of outdoor credits include a World 10,000m gold (2003) and silver (2005), and a World Half Marathon title (2002), made an unsuccessful attempt at her own World indoor 5000m in Stuttgart last year. Then only a few hours later in Boston, USA, lost the World record entirely when her younger compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba clocked 14:32.93 at the Boston Indoor Games to slice seven seconds off her time.
“My training has gone well and I believe that I have what it takes to break the (3000m) record,” said Adere in a telephone interview on Wednesday.
Adere is also scheduled to make her long-awaited marathon debut in London in April, but is adamant that her speed training for Stuttgart will not have any negative impact on any endurance-intensive preparations for London.
“There are more than three months between the two races,” she said. “I am occasionally doing endurance training for London along with my speed training for Stuttgart. But I do not think that there will be problems adjusting later to prepare for London.”
