April 5 2007, OTTAWA – Athletics Canada is pleased to announce that the 2006 Canadian Paralympic Championships and Ian Fowler of Moncton’s successful bid to host the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships both won awards at the 2007 Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) Prestige Awards.
The National Paralympic Championships took place in London, Ontario July 6-8 as part of the Ontario Paralympic Summer Championships. The event was nominated in the CSTA Sport Event of the Year Award (Budget under 250,000). Chantal Petitclerc was the story of the event as this was her first competition after contracting a serious illness after the Commonwealth Games. Petitclerc won four gold medals in London.
On March 29th in Osaka, (Japan), the City of Moncton was awarded the 2010 International Association of Athletics Federation World Junior Championships. Ian was nominated in the category of CSTA Industry Builder of the Year Award. After the announcement, IAAF President Lamine Diack would say; “IAAF Council fully supports the ambitions of Moncton and Athletics Canada to organize a top class event which will promote the sport but also leave a lasting legacy in the shape of this new track.” A component of hosting the event sees Moncton unveiling a state of the art track and field facility.
The awards were presented yesterday (April 4) at a gala luncheon during the CSTA Sport Event Congress at the Hilton Lac Leamy in Gatineau, Québec.
