Press Release

Athletics Canada is pleased to announce that The Surin Group has signed on as the title sponsor of the 2005 Canadian Track and Field Championships taking place July 15-17 in Winnipeg.

The Montreal-based company is lead by Olympic gold medalist and world champion Bruny Surin who has been building a career in the world of business since his retirement in 2002.

"We're delighted to be associated with a former national team personality like Bruny Surin and his organization, the Surin Group," says Joanne Mortimore, Chief Operating Officer of Athletics Canada. "Bruny has been able to translate his success on the track into success in the business world and it is great to now see him supporting the world champions of tomorrow through sponsorship of this event."

Surin has been a household name in Canadian track and field since making his first world championship final back in 1991 in Tokyo. In total, Surin competed in six world championships, running in an unprecedented five straight 100m finals and claiming two silver medals. In addition, Surin claimed world indoor 60m titles in both 1993 and 1995. Surin's greatest athletic moment came as a member of the Canadian 4 x 100m relay that won two world championships and an Olympic gold medal between 1995 and 1997.

"Track and field is the building block of my life;" says Surin. "I use the same methods and principles of hard work and dedication to succeed not only in life but also in business. I have been privileged to make my living as an athlete and am now very delighted to have the opportunity to be part of such an historic event for the development of our nation's best athletes."

The Surin Group consists of several enterprises headed by the former Olympic gold medalist, including Xistence, a vitamin supplement line; Top Elite Management which represents such Canadian track and field stars as Nicholas Macrozonaris and Dana Ellis, and the Bruny Surin Foundation which is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life, physically and emotionally of children.

The Canadian Track and Field Championships are being hosted by Athletics Manitoba and will feature over 500 athletes competing in 38 events. Results from the event will be used to help select teams for the 2005 IAAF World Championships, the 2005 World University Games, the 2005 Francophone Games and the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Athletics Canada is the national sport governing body for the sport of track and field including cross-country running and road running. Its purpose is to support high performance athletics excellence at the world level and to provide leadership in developmental athletics. Athletics Canada is a not for profit, charitable organization operating under a board of directors elected by provincial / territorial members.
