5th Mercedes-Benz Mile To Be Run In Ontario In June

CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO-----April 24th, 2008----The 5th Annual Mercedes-Benz Classic Mile will be held once again at Cambridge’s Galt Collegiate Institute on Saturday June 14th, 2008.
The event has attracted worldwide attention and is held on the crushed brick track at Ontario’s oldest high school, Galt C.I.
The day begins at 3:30 p.m. with age class mile races for hundreds of competitors as young as 7 all the way up to Masters. Indeed, world renowned master’s competitor Ed Whitlock competed here last year at the age of 76.
The highlight of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Mile is always the men’s invitational race. The winner will receive the keys to a brand new Mercedes Benz B200 Sedan - if he breaks the four minute barrier.
In 2005 Kenya’s Laban Rotich recorded 3:58.9 to win a car. The following year Rotich returned and held off Cambridge’s own Commonwealth 1,500m silver medalist Nathan Brannen in a thrilling tactical race.
Last year Rotich brought along his younger brother Shedrack Korir and set the pace for him. Their tactics were successful and Korir recorded a new meet record of 3:56.05 to win the Mercedes.
Past winners in the women’s elite mile have included 2004 Canadian Olympian Carmen Douma-Hussar of Cambridge, the 2004 IAAF World Indoor 1,500m silver medalist.
