Youth stars shine at 2006 JO Cross Country Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - Kelley Robinson of Nederland, Colo., and Steven Fahy of Carlsbad, Calif., dominated their respective races at Saturday's USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, held at Plantes Ferry Recreation Park in Spokane, Wash.

More than 2,300 athletes age 8 to 18 from all 57 USATF Associations competed for boys' and girls' titles in 10 age divisions on a day that saw sporadic sleet, rain and sun. Team champions also were crowned in those divisions. The USATF Junior Olympic program age divisions are bantam (10 and under) racing over 3 kilometers; midget (11-12) racing 3 km; youth (13-14) racing 4 km; intermediate (15-16) racing 5 km and young men/women (17-18) racing 5 km.

Competing in the youth girls division, the 12-year-old Kelley Robinson (Ric Rojas) cruised to a 42-second victory with a time of 14 minutes 13.24 seconds over 4 km. The next closest competitor was Olivia Tarantino (N.J. - unattached) who finished second in 14:55.27.

Ten-year-old Steven Fahy, competing in the boys bantam division, claimed top honors in his division as he crossed the line in 10:47.65 over 3 km. Finishing second was Reuben Dominguez (Scrr) in 10:57.72. Steven's brother Darren, the 2004 bantam boys champion, took third place in the midget boys division in 10:17.76 over 3 km.

Other individual winners for girls included Paige Rice (Oregon CC) in the bantam division, 11:08.78; Katie Shirley (Equalizers) in midget 10:36.51; Jacque Taylor (Santa Rosa express) in intermediate, 18:10.74; and Katrina Drennen (Federal Way) in young women, 18:20.48. Girls' team champions were San Diego SoCal Road Runners in bantam and midget, Southern Cal Road Runners in youth, Team Idaho in intermediate and Federal Way in young women.

Individual boys' winners were Cody Curtis (N. Idaho TF) in midget, 9:51.14; Daniel Rosales (Scrr) in youth, 13:01.62; Ryan Prentice (Federal Way) in intermediate, 16:01.96; and Greg Billington (Spokane Merc) in young men, 15:39.57. Team champions were Lake City Cheetahs in bantam, Granite State Flash in midget, Equalizers in youth, Federal Way in intermediate, and Team Idaho in young men. It was the second team title in a row for both the Granite State Flash and Team Idaho.
