Bernard Lagat will attack the US one mile all-comers' record in Saturday's Prefontaine Grand Prix Classic in Eugene.

The Kenyan-born star, who has been granted American citizenship, will challenge the mark of three minutes 49.92 seconds set by Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj, who beat Lagat for the Olympic 1,500 metres gold medal in Athens last August.

El Guerrouj - who has pulled out of the 3,000m at the event through sickness - set the record in the Bowerman mile four years ago and it is a reasonable target for Lagat.

Already this year he has ran an indoor time of 3mins 49.89secs, while he has a fast early-season 1,500m clocking of 3mins 34.34secs, which augurs well for his record bid.
