Squaw Valley, California, June 27. Western States Race Director Greg Soderlund announced today that all runners on the 2008 official start list (see ws100.com/2008startlist.htm) will be granted automatic entries for the 2009 race. The 2008 event was canceled earlier in the week due to safety concerns resulting from wildfires near the course and dense smoke in the entire area.

Further details were not announced, but race officials did comment that it was unlikely that there would be a lottery for the 2009 race, as any unclaimed spots would likely be filled by "two-time losers" resulting from the 2008 lottery. This is the last year that the two-time loser rule will apply.
