CARLSBAD, Calif. – The Carlsbad Marathon’s Chamber of Commerce day had its fair share of picture-perfect marathon performances and agonizing physical meltdowns.

Sunny skies and start line temperatures in the upper 40’s greeted over 7,000 marathoners and half marathoners at the 14th Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon held on Sunday, January 16, 2005.

It was Andrew Musuva, of Kenya, who managed to cross the marathon finish line first in a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 11 seconds, despite having painful leg cramps which produced a series of seemingly sloth-like seven-minute-miles in the home stretch.

Musuva, who won the Orange County Marathon last month, didn’t capture the lead until 16 miles into the race when he passed the fading leader, countryman James Bungei.

Musuva’s turn to fade came just after the 24-mile mark when the leg cramps started to take their toll. “I was out of it physically,” said Musuva, 35, who has run five marathons in as many months. “I was just trying to maintain myself,” said Musuva.

Dzmitry Sivou of Belarus also cruised by Bungei in this seaside race as did local favorite, David Kloz of Carlsbad, CA. finishing second in 2:28:11 and third in 2:32:54 respectively. Jacob Kirwa, an early Kenyan contender, dropped out of the race at the 11-mile mark due to a calf injury.

Bungei still managed to finish fourth place in 2:33:04 despite having his 5:15 per-mile-gait erode into a mortal-like walk and several 10-minute miles. “I walked for five minutes,” said Bungie. “I do not think I had enough (training) mileage,” said Bungie who had not raced a marathon since May of 2003.

In the women’s division, Volha Yudziankova, 38, of Belarus, was not seriously challenged during the course of the day, despite arriving in Carlsbad less than 48 hours before the race after a 16-hour flight from Belarus.

Yudziankova, the 2004 Carlsbad Marathon (then known as the San Diego Marathon) champion won the woman’s division in 2:42:07, just 10 seconds slower than 2004 victory (2:41:57). JulieAnne White, 42, of the United Kingdom now living in Solana Beach, CA, finished second in 2:57:31. Amy Truitt of Portland, OR finished third in 3:04:47.

Ibrahim Aden, a US citizen originally from Somalia, won his debut half marathon in 1:04:27. A two-time Olympian for Somalia, Aden has a mile personal best of 3:55.53.

Kim Fitchen-Young, 36, of Santa Cruz, CA dominated the woman’s half marathon division with a winning time of 1:12:57.
