CARMEL, Calif. - (January 5, 2009) - More mud is on tap for runners in the 2009 Mud Run, an annual event presented by the Big Sur Marathon in cooperation with the U.S. Army Garrison-Presidio of Monterey and Cal State University Monterey Bay. The fourth presentation is slated for Saturday, March 28, on the former Ft. Ord lands in Seaside, Calif.

Popular with local military personnel, college students and adventurers who prefer sports with a twist, the Mud Run is open to all-comers 15 years and older. Encompassing approximately five miles of road, trails, mud pits, walls and other obstacles, the 2009 event will add a fourth pit and more obstacles. The race is patterned after the popular mud run at Camp Pendleton, and will include local Army and Marine drill sergeants on site barking orders to motivate participants along the way. The race begins at CSUMB's Freeman Stadium at 9:00am and concludes with a final shower and lap around the stadium's track.

Participants may compete as individuals (civilian or military) or as part of a 5-person team. Team categories include Open Male, Open Female, Mixed, Corporate, Military, Public Safety and Collegiate. All five team members must cross the finish line together with linked arms to compete for awards.

Initiated by the Presidio of Monterey's Family, Morale Welfare and Recreation division in 2006, the Mud Run is a cooperative effort of the Presidio, the CSUMB athletic department and the Big Sur International Marathon race organization. Key sponsor Granite Construction Company assists with the building of the mud pits and other course obstacles.

Entry fees for the Mud Run are $48 for individual entries and $240 for a 5-person team entry with a discount for active military participants and students. Online registration is available at BigSurMudRun.org. For questions, contact (831) 625-6226 or info@bsim.org.
