KAANAPALI, Maui, HI (August 22, 2004) - The Maui Half Marathon has reached its first-year capacity of 1,000 runners and registration for the event has closed, announced race officials today. Scheduled for September 19, 2004, the 13.1-mile trek through paradise has attracted participants from 44 states and several foreign countries.
"We set a conservative entry limit for our first year because our primary goal has been to have a logistically perfect event," said Bob Craver, race director. "Given the popularity of the race, we will look at the possibility of increasing the field in 2005."

The new Half will be held simultaneously with the 34th Annual Maui Marathon. Both races will take place on Sunday, September 19th, but in different towns. As in previous years, the point-to-point 26.2-mile marathon course will start in Kahului and finish at Whalers Village in Kaanapali.
The Half Marathon will sport an out-and-back course that will start near the marathon's Kaanapali finish line and run through Lahaina, a historic seaside whaling village, before the 6.5-mile turnaround point. Both races will utilize the same finish line.

At this time entries into the Maui Marathon and the Maui Tacos 5K are still available. The traditional pre-race "Carbo Load," scheduled for September 17, 2004, is sold out.
