Halekas and Zurn are RRCA National Ultra Champions – 100 Mile Distance

On July 21st – 22nd the Sagebrush Stompers (Carson City, NV) and the Tahoe Mountain Milers (Lake Tahoe, USA) running clubs hosted the RRCA National Ultra Championships as part of the Tahoe Rim Trail 50K/50M/100M Endurance Runs at beautiful Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The 100 mile event was this year’s Road Runners Club of America National Ultra Distance Championship while the 50K and 50 mile events served as the RRCA Nevada State Ultra Championships and the USATF Ultra Championship.
The course is a combination of dirt roads, single track trails and long segments of the world famous Tahoe Rim Trail. Although the course is challenging (6,895 foot elevation gain and loss and altitudes ranging from 6,800’ to 9,000’) it showcases some incredibly scenic panoramas of the Lake Tahoe Basin, Marlette Lake and the Washoe Valley. The 100-mile event tested the ultra runners on a double loop of the existing 50-mile course. The elevation gain and loss in the 100-mile event is nearly 20,000’. Runners had 35 hours to complete the course.
Net proceeds from this event benefit the Tahoe Rim Trail Association’s trail maintenance program, the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park’s Backcountry Mountain Bike Safety Patrol, the Carson City American Legion and the South Tahoe High School Cross Country program.
RRCA President Bee McLeod was at the race to support race directors David Cotter and Kevin Bigley. She completed the 50K event along with her husband and fellow RRCA Board Member, Lisa Paige. RRCA Western Region Director, David Epstein, was also in attendance to show his support for his fellow board members and the Northern California State Rep and race director, David Cotter.
