MOAB, Utah - (March 17, 2012) - Warm weather held for the 37th Canyonlands Half Marathon on Saturday morning, though winds heralding colder temps kept course records from being set. Jeffrey Eggleston, 27, of Flagstaff, AZ handily won the half-marathon in 1 hour, 10 minutes, 8 seconds with B.J. Christensen of North Salt Lake, UT nearly four minutes back (1:13:55).

The women's half-marathon was a bit closer as Heather Utrata, 30, of Englewood, CO finished first in 1:25:39, less than a minute ahead of runner-up Melody Jenson of Orem, UT (1:26:26).

Clint Wells of Louisville, CO won the 5 Mile race, clocking 25:45. Wells, 36, finished 4½ minutes ahead of Masters winner Scott Hajicek, 57, of Lakewood, CO. On Hajicek's heels were a pair of high school runners Jacob Francis and Treyton Helquist from Moab, UT who crossed the finish line together, hands clasped and arms upraised.

Alison Steele, 31, of Longmont, CO was the women's 5 Mile winner in a time of 34:00.

The Masters (40 and older) races were also uncontested. Walter Brown, 40, from South Jordan, UT was the top Master in the Half Marathon, running 1:18:50 and Christine Adamowski, 44, of Evergreen, CO took home the Sheri Haymore Female Masters award in 1:30:17, while in the 5 Mile, Scott Hajicek, 57, finished in 30:33, and Celsa Bowman, 46, of Salt Lake City, UT was the first female Masters runner (38:50).

Supporting the thousands of runners was a volunteer and staff corps of 450-plus at the event.

"This event wouldn't happen without the incredible support we get from our volunteers," said Race Director Ranna Bieschke.

An extra effort was made this year to support the event's full transition to compostable cups at every race location. More than 80,000 compostable cups were distributed at packet pick-up, the race starts, along the course and at the finish. All were collected into green compostable bags and transported to a commercial composting facility after the event. All other waste was sorted into trash, recycleables and conventional compostables.

"We've been able to reduce what we send to the landfill to literally a couple dozen bags of trash," Bieschke added. "For an event that involves thousands of people, we're pretty proud of that."

There were 3,240 finishers in the Half and 717 finishers in the 5 Mile.
