BERKELEY, CA – August 18, 2014 – 2008 Olympic marathon competitor, ultra marathoner and GU Energy VP of Innovation, Research & Development, Magdalena Boulet, along with teammate and 2012 Olympic marathon trial qualifier, Caitlin Smith, took first place in the Women’s Open Division at the 2014 PepsiCo TransRockies Run, which concluded in Beaver Creek, Colorado on Sunday.
Competing under the team name Team Endurables, the two distance stars won each of the six stages of the TransRockies, and took first in the overall teams and the women’s division with a cumulative time of 18:47:32.
One of the United States’ most acclaimed trail races, The PepsiCo TransRockies Run features a six-day, point-to-point trail running race beginning in Buena Vista, CO and covering 120 miles and more than 20,000 feet of elevation gain. The course includes a mix of single-track and forest road through the heart of the White River and San Isabel National Forests, reaching altitudes of over 12,500 feet.
“We’re thrilled to have been a part of this breathtaking endurance race,” said Magdalena Boulet following the win. “The hills, heat, and altitude were mentally tough, but as Caitlin said, we carried each other through the ups and downs, and really focused on proper fueling and recovery in between the stages to get us through each day.”
Boulet adds the TransRockies win to a long list of notable athletic credentials. In 2014 alone, she won the 8km USA National Masters Championship, Way too Cool 50km and Cayuga Trail 50 mile races. She is scheduled to appear in this December’s North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile Championships, where she placed second in her ultra debut last year.
Smith, who is coached and trained by Boulet, is no stranger to the ultra-running scene. She took the running community by storm back in 2009 after winning her first 50k and a first place team finish at the 2009 TransRockies race. Since then she has competed in 70 races and holds 42 first-place finishes and 26 course records.
Boulet and Smith – both residents of Oakland -- posted upbeat updates to their social media pages during the six-day race including “For tonight’s trail run, we’ll be going Tastefully Nude” in reference to GU Energy’s newly released lighter formulated electrolyte brew mix flavor, Tastefully Nude.
