THE 2002 MAUI MARATHON CHARITY CANISTER CAMPAIGN
WILL ASSIST A YOUNG KIDNEY TRANSPLANT PATIENT

The 2002 Maui Marathon is assisting in fund raising for "R.J.", a young kidney transplant recipient who continues to need care, by placing canisters to collect donations during the month of September. Canisters will be located island wide including shops and restaurants in Queen Kaahumanu Center, Whalers Village and many other businesses around Maui.

Eight-year old R.J. started to show signs of kidney problems in February 2000, was hospitalized and put on dialysis. Facing end stage renal failure, he received a kidney transplant in October 2001. RJ's father was the kidney donor and suffered complications from the procedure resulting in his missing work and many medical bills for the family. RJ continues to need regular monthly care and is still restricted from many physical activities. It is hoped RJ will be able to return to school as a third grader this year.

Nominated by a A Keiki's Dream to be the beneficiary of this campaign, RJ will receive 100 percent of all the monies raised in the Maui Marathon canisters.

Hundreds of volunteers participate in the Marathon's fund raising activities. This year's beneficiaries also include A Keiki's Dream, St. Anthony Junior Senior High School, Imua Rehab, Aloha House, Hawaiian Canoe Club, Punana Leo O Lahaina, Halau Hula O Keola-Ali'iokekai, and Arts Education for Childrens Group. Since 1995, the Maui Marathon has raised more than $158,000 for youth-oriented Maui charities.

The 2002 Maui Marathon will be held on Sunday, September 22nd beginning at 5:30am along a course that starts at Queen Kaahumanu Center and ends at Whalers Village.

The Maui Marathon, presented by Valley Isle Road Runners, and its annual fundraising efforts are made possible by strong community support.
