CUPERTINO, Calif. - (April 21, 2002) - Race day at Compaq Computer
Corporation brought ideal conditions and a deep and competitive field of
first time competitors and past champions to the 18th Compaq Up & Running 10K
race. The hotly contested race crowned first time men's competitor, Kalid
Abdalah of Oakland, Calif. and last year's women's champion, Linda Somers
Smith of San Louis Obispo, Calif. in 30:37 and 34:51, respectively.
Already a stop on the USATF Pacific Association Circuit, this year's race
brought a new distinction, serving as a qualifier for the San Francisco Bay
to Breakers race on May 19th. The race drew a large field of elite runners
from throughout the West Coast, including champion Somers Smith, 1996 Olympic
marathoner and qualifier for the World Half-Marathon Championship in
Brussels, Belgium on May 5.
Compaq Up & Running is the most successful corporate-sponsored race in
Silicon Valley, and the only Bay Area running event where 100% of the
proceeds are donated directly to charity. With more than 3,000 combined
participants in the 10K, wheelchair, 2-mile run/walk and 1-mile fun run for
kids Compaq raised more than $60,000 for Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa
Clara County. Over its 18 year existence, the race has raised nearly $300,000
for local charities.
"We're proud to have brought the Compaq Up & Running 10-K to the Bay Area
community each year for the past 18 years," said Pauline Nist, vice president
and general manager, Compaq NonStop Division. "It is always an enjoyable
event for families, friends, our employees and elite and weekend athletes
alike - all in the name of charity." Nist continued, "Serving the communities
in which our employees live and work is a priority for Compaq, and we're
honored to be able to support the extraordinary programs of the Second
Harvest Food Bank each year."
"At a time when clients of the food bank are faced with increasing living
costs, having a partner like Compaq is extremely beneficial to us," said Dave
Sandretto, executive director, Second Harvest Food Bank. "Compaq's
contributions enable us to continue providing and improving programs for our
clients at a time when our services are in great demand."
Parents, kids, city officials, community members and SJ Sharkie from the San
Jose Sharks were all on hand to cheer on participants and enjoy the day's
festivities. Everyone in attendance was able to treat themselves to food,
music, extreme sports, gigantic slides and more - a virtual "playland" during
the post-race party. More than 400 Compaq and Second Harvest volunteers were
on hand to ensure a full day of fun for the entire family.
All participants received a event T-shirt, continental breakfast and
admission to the post-race party. The winners were acknowledged at an awards
ceremony directly following the events and additional prizes such as
round-trip airline tickets and gift certificates to local hotels and
restaurants were also awarded.
