DES MOINES, IOWA - Alan Webb, who set an American record in the mile last year, has notified Drake Relays director Brian Brown that he has withdrawn from competing in the men's invitational mile which will be run Saturday.

"My training hasn't progressed to where I feel I can deliver the type of performance that I would like to for the Drake Relays," said Webb. "I hope to be able to make up for it and come back next year."

Webb was named the outstanding men's performer at the 2007 Drake Relays after setting a meet record in the mile in 3 minutes 51.71 seconds to break Steve Scott's mark of 3:55.26 set in 1979.

Two months later Webb broke Scott's American record in the mile, clocking 3:46.91 at the Atletiek Vlaanderen meet in Brasschaa, Belgium to break the mark of 3:47.69 by Scott in 1982.
