He’s won three consecutive New York City Marathons, the Boston Marathon and the Comrades Ultra 90K Marathon across South Africa.

He’s a former world record holder.

And last year Alberto Salazar collapsed and nearly died from sudden cardiac arrest.

On October 5 Salazar will race again for the first time since his collapse…running in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon 10-Mile. He has been named Honorary Team Captain of the 2008 Medtronic Global Heroes: 25 inspiring runners from around the world who, like Salazar, have overcome chronic health problems with the help of medical technology. Salazar himself received an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) last fall to help regulate his heartbeat.

Salazar is committed to spreading the word about running and living safely with a chronic health condition and will participate in several outreach activities throughout marathon weekend, Oct. 3-5, 2008 in Minneapolis St. Paul, Minnesota.

In its third year, the Medtronic Global Heroes program recognizes runners from around the world who have a medical device to treat conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, chronic pain and spinal and neurological disorders. Salazar and the 25 Global Heroes illustrate that such illnesses don’t automatically disqualify you from leading a full life and pursuing your passions.
