Nation's best set to compete at USA Masters Championships

BEREA, OHIO - More than 1,000 of the nation’s best masters athletes including 37 recently crowned world champions will compete at Baldwin College in Berea, Ohio July 28-31 at the USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Events will take place at George Finney Stadium, July 28-31, beginning daily at 8:00am. There is no cost to fans, who are invited to come watch these elite athletes compete for national titles and world records on one of the country's premier tracks.

Competing world champions include: jazz great Nolan Shaheed of Pasadena, Calif., who played lead trumpet with Count Basie, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, and Marvin Gaye; Lisa Ryan, 41, of Albuquerque, N.M., who has run sub-7 minutes in the 2000m steeplechase; and Kathy Martin, 55, of Northport, N.Y., who is a former USATF masters athlete of the year.

Other top stars include M90 World Record Decathlete Ralph Maxwell of Alto, Texas, and Johnnye Valien, W85 from Los Angeles. Valien was recently named USATF’s Athlete of the Week after she won five events and set two world records at the World Championships.

Two Cleveland-area sprinters who just won gold at the World Championships are also expected to compete: best selling author Steve Robbins, 68, of Cleveland Heights, won the Men’s 65+ division 100m and 200m, and Khulad Mulazim, 45, from Lyndhurst, won gold in the Men’s 45+ division 200m and 400m.
          
Additional Cleveland-area athletes entered include:

  • John Means, M91, Richmond Heights, Ohio - holds M90 American record in the 400m, will run the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m, and 4x400m relay. Of note is Means’ 4x400m relay team for the Over the Hill track club that includes his two sons and  grandson on the same team.
  • Paul Williams, M76, Richmond Heights, Ohio - 100m, 200m, 4x100m
  • John Catalano, M51, Mayfield Heights, Ohio - 100m, 200m, 4x100m, 4x400m
  • Nino Monaco, M60, Mayfield Heights, Ohio - 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 4x100m, 4x400m
  • Sue Isabella, W37, Highland Heights, Ohio - 2000m steeplechase, 4x100m, 4x400m
  • Cathi Gerson, W61, Lyndhurst, Ohio - 2000m steeplechase
  • Jeff Gerson, M64, Lyndhurst, Ohio - 400m, 1500m, javelin, hammer throw, weight throw, 4x100m, 4x400m, 4x800m
  • JoAnne Siegel, W52, Cleveland Heights, Ohio - 1500m, 5000m
  • Lenny Weiss, Lakewood, Ohio - M64, 400m, 1500m, javelin, hammer throw, weight throw, 4x100m, 4x400m, 4x800m

The Oldest competitor entered is San Diego’s Leland McPhie, 97, who won gold at the World Championships in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump. Harrison Dillard, who attended Baldwin Wallace and won four Olympic gold medals (1948 in the 100m and 4X100m, and 1952 in the 110m hurdles and 4x100m) and two NCAA titles, will also attend the meet.
