ATLANTA (October 27, 2013)Close to 3,000 runners and walkers participated in the Atlanta Marathon and 10-Miler, as well as the Atlanta Marathon 5K and Kids’ Fun Run Presented by American Family Insurance on Sunday, October 27. This year marked the 51st running of the Atlanta Marathon, and the inaugural running of the 10-Miler, 5K and Fun Run.

“We are so proud of how the 2013 Atlanta Marathon events have come together to provide a platform for individuals throughout the Atlanta community and beyond to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle through running and walking,” said Sue Payne, Atlanta Track Club interim executive director.  “From those who achieved their goal of completing a marathon to individuals who walked their very first 5K and everything in between, these events provided a supportive atmosphere for participants of all fitness abilities to experience the excitement of the Atlanta Marathon.”

J. Penny of Johnson City, Tennessee broke the tape as the overall winner of the 2013 Atlanta Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 39 minutes, 4 seconds. Penny pulled away from the pack after the first turn in the course and maintained the lead for the remainder of the 26.2 miles. For the women, Malia Mullen came in first at 2:54:52. Mullen is a triathlete, but had never run a full marathon before today.

Georgians took the top spots for the both the Atlanta Marathon 10-Miler and 5K presented by American Family Insurance. For the 10-Miler, Dougie Coffed finished first for the men and Kathleen Turchin was the first woman across the finish line with times of 54:20 and 1:06:56 respectively. Coffed took the lead at mile one and held it for the remainder of the event. Lucas Muniz and Elsje J. Yahah took top honors in the Atlanta Marathon 5K presented by American Family Insurance.

Atlanta Marathon and 10-Miler participants were treated to aid stations and cheer zone support from 25 local nonprofits that were selected to be part of Atlanta Track Club’s Adopt a Marathon Mile program. The organizations were selected to participate in the program based on their dedication to improving health and fitness in the metro Atlanta community. Each organization adopted a mile along the course and provided volunteers to support an aid station and cheer zone within their mile. Atlanta Track Club will donate up to $187,500 among the organizations, depending on the level of assistance and participation from each group.
