MIAMI - (January 23, 2007) - In 2003, 4,900 people ran in the Inaugural ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon®, South Florida's first major marathon in nearly a decade. In its 5th year, the event now draws 12,000 runners, hundreds of which have run the race each of the first 5 years and will be recognized as "5 Palm" Runners. There are close to 700 individuals who are eligible by competing in the 2007 race on Sunday, January 28.
Currently, the field of 10,500 registered runners includes 431 participants that qualify as "5 Palm" Runners. These runners will be awarded with a special edition commemorative jacket from New Balance. The jacket, similar to a high school letterman jacket, will have the unique 5 "Palm" logo on the back marking their membership in a select group of people with the race logo on the front.
"We appreciate the commitment and support these runners have shown us," Course Director Frankie Ruiz noted. "We know that the '5 Palm' Runners will wear their jackets proudly and become ambassadors of the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon."
The "5 Palm" award is named after the unique finishers medal each runner gets when crossing the finish line of the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon®. The medal, named the SPINNING PALM, is one of the most sought after medals in the industry, where runners often times choose races strictly on the look of the medal. Miami's SPINNING PALM is the first medal in the industry to have had a full spinning centerpiece and has since become a trendsetter for other marathons. The medal has now transformed into an Art Deco design with two spinning parts, always featuring a palm tree with the Miami skyline in the background. The 5th Anniversary Spinning Palm will also have a brand new feature to be revealed at the Finish Line for all runners.
Registration is still open for the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon and the races will sell out when registration reaches 12,000. The marathon is currently $95 and the half-marathon is $70. Registration has also opened for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Tropical 5K benefiting Community Partnership for Homeless.
