Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. -- Runners and fitness enthusiasts are invited to join running guru and BAA Boston Marathon® Race Director, Dave McGillivray, January 17-22, 2009, on board the Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas for the 2009 Running Wild Cruise and Fitness Expo which will include a 5K and 10K run on board the ship.
This five-night Western Caribbean Cruise sails from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Running and fitness events for adults and children will take place on the ship’s running track, sports court, and fitness center. The ship’s on board conference center will host the Fitness Expo, during which McGillivray will serve as Key Note Speaker.
Daily sporting events and seminars, demonstrations of new products, nightly cocktail parties and opportunities to try new “Zumba Fitness” classes are among the highlights of this fantastic trip. Also adding to the fun will be T-shirts, goody bags and prize drawings throughout the cruise. Race shirts, medals and prizes for the top runners will be awarded to the participants of the onboard road races.
Dave McGillivray, president of DMSE Sports, Inc (www.dmsesports.com) and Race Director of the BAA Boston Marathon®, Marathon of the Palm Beaches, and the ING Denver Marathon, to name a few, will be directing the on board running events. McGillivray, in addition to being a race director, is also a veteran endurance athlete. His accomplishments include running across the country in 1978, running up the East Coast of the US, completion of 8 Hawaii Ironman triathlons and several other extraordinary athletic endeavors, yet running at sea is going to be something new for him.
“When Cruises, Inc. approached me with the idea of having a 5K and 10K “road” race on board a ship I knew I couldn’t turn it down. The logistics of being on a ship mean that as a race director I won’t need to plan for shuttle buses to the start and finish, or runner’s baggage buses or even road closures...the focus will be on putting on a really fun, and very unique race.”
There will also be a book signing during the trip, in which McGillivray will autograph copies of his book, The Last Pick (Rodale Press), which recounts his 1978 Run Across the Country and countless other athletic achievements, in which he shows the reader that any goal, big or small, can be attained through preparation and a steadfast belief in oneself. His approach to life will inspire the reader, who may just recognize a little piece of themselves in his experiences.
