SARASOTA, Fla. - More than 3,600 runners and walkers took part in the 8th First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon & Relay, a 20 percent increase over record participation levels recorded in 2012.

Evan Dehart, a 27-year-old from Jupiter, Fla., took a commanding lead from the start, winning the men’s title in 1 hour, 10 minutes, 24 seconds, 42 seconds shy of last year’s course record. Sara Petrick, 26, of Tampa, took the women’s title in a course record 1:19:34, besting her previously set record of 1:20:00 from 2012.

Local runner Heather Butcher, Venice, Fla., took the masters title in 1:24:19 and finished 4th overall in the women’s division and Jeff Lessie of Tampa, Fla., the men’s masters title in 1:19:50, and 7th place in the men’s division.

On the relay side, Sarasota-based Team New Balance, including Ricardo Lomas and Kyle Donovan, took the men’s title in 1:17:55 and RunnerGirl the women’s relay title in 1:30:29.

Race Director Javier Sanchez noted: “"It was another perfect day for a race in Sarasota and some really fast PRs for many of today’s participants that came from more than 40 states and Canada. We’re also very proud of our two U.S. soldier Shadow Runner teams in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia who ran their own First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon at the corresponding time zone – a total of 71 runners. We greatly appreciate all the community and sponsor support and look forward to continuing to grow this event into one of the nation’s top half marathons and relays.”
