SunTrust Richmond Marathon breaks event entry records

RICHMOND, VA –The SunTrust Richmond Marathon, which will celebrate its 32nd running this Saturday,
November 14, has broken its all-time event registration record. As of Tuesday afternoon, November 10, over 14,650 participants have registered for the SunTrust Richmond Marathon,McDonald’s Half Marathon, HCA Virginia 8k and Richmond Times-Dispatch Kids Run, besting the mark of 14,601 set for last year’s event. This marks the tenth time in 11 years that the total event entry record has been set.
A total of 5,150 runners are currently signed up for the 26.2-mile SunTrust Richmond Marathon. That breaks the marathon’s previous record of 5,109 set at the 30th anniversary running of “America’s Friendliest Marathon” in 2007. This is the ninth time in eleven years that the marathon has set a new entry. The marathon’s companion race, the McDonald’s Half Marathon, is also at 5,150 registrants, easily besting the mark of 4,619 entered for last year’s inaugural 13.1-mile race.

Walk-up registration will be available at the Health & Fitness Expo at the Arthur Ashe Center on Thursday, November 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday,Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. There is no race day registration or packet pick up!
The SunTrust RichmondMarathon will be held on Saturday, November 14 beginning at 8 a.m. at 7th and
Broad Streets in downtown Richmond. It is preceded by the HCA Virginia 8k at 7 a.m. and the McDonald’s Half Marathon at 7:30 a.m. The Richmond Times-Dispatch Kids Run takes place on Friday, November 13 at 7 p.m. at the Ashe Center, site of packet pick up.

Event to impact traffic throughout Richmond. As the fields for the SunTrust Richmond Marathon,
McDonald’s Half Marathon and HCA Virginia 8k have grown, so has the need for increased street closings to accommodate the thousands of participants. The primary message that Richmond area motorists should heed on race day is to travel by interstate whenever possible.
