VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Ryan Hall, the fastest American marathoner in history, will return to the oceanfront boardwalk of Virginia Beach on Sunday, September 1 for the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon. Hall, who holds the U.S. record in the half-marathon at 59 minutes, 43 seconds, will be making his second appearance at the event. In 2011 he finished fourth, running 1:03:02.
A two-time U.S. Olympian, Hall ran the fastest marathon ever by an American with his 2:04:58 clocking at the 2011 Boston Marathon. The 30-year-old qualified for last year’s Olympic Marathon in London with a runner-up finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Houston. A hamstring injury forced him to drop out of last summer’s Olympic Marathon, but Hall is currently healthy and prepping for the ING New York City Marathon in November.
“Having run the 2011 Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon I know what potential this race holds,” said Hall, who will head to Africa following the event to continue his training for New York. “The environment up and down the beach on Labor Day Weekend is electric, the course fast, and the competition good. It will provide the perfect testing ground for my fitness.”
Hall will lead more than 15,000 entrants at the annual Labor Day Weekend event, which was the first destination half marathon in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. The event will include a two-person half-marathon relay as well as a 5K “mini-marathon” for the second time.
Stretching across 13.1 seaside miles in one of America’s most scenic beach communities, the half marathon starts adjacent to the Virginia Beach Convention Center, runs through the resort area and Camp Pendleton, and finishes on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk. The post-race entertainment kicks off Sunday night with an opening act at 7pm, followed by a special Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach awards ceremony at 8. Third Eye Blind will take the stage as the headlining act an hour later.
Race weekend kicks off Friday with a two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The expo is free and open to the public where over 100 exhibitors will offer free nutritional samples, showcase the latest in running gear and fitness apparel.
The entertainment-filled weekend kicks off on Friday night, August 30 with multi-platinum headliner Daughtry on the 5th Street Beach Stage, followed by a matinee performance with Barenaked Ladies and opening act Smash Mouth on Saturday. Runners will celebrate their half-marathon finish on Sunday night with the 90s anthems of Third Eye Blind.
All Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon runners and relay participants receive free entry into all American Music Festival concerts over Labor Day weekend while “mini marathon” participants and race volunteers will receive free entry into the Sunday night Headliner Concert. Additional tickets for the public are available online at the Health & Fitness Expo on August 30 and 31, and at the gate.
Over the history of the half-marathon, more than $12 million has been raised through the event for a variety of charities and local non-profit organizations
