Patrick Cheruiyot Breaks Course Record at Broad Street 10 Mile Run

PHILADELPHIA -- Kenya's Patrick Cheruiyot won the 28th Broad Street 10-Mile Run in record fashion Sunday.
Aided by a friendly tail wind, Cheruiyot reached the finish line in 45 minutes, 14 seconds, two seconds faster than the course record, set by fellow countryman Simon Wangai in 2002.
The 21-year-old Cheruiyot edged another Kenyan runner, Benson Cheruiyot -- no relation -- by five seconds.
In the women's race, Kenya's Naomi Wangui passed Russia's Olga Romanova at the 2-mile mark and went on to victory in 53:43.
Romanova, the 2006 champion, finished 31 seconds back. Renee Gunning of Philadelphia finished 14 seconds after that.
During the racing season, the Cheruiyots live and train together in the Philadelphia suburb of West Chester.
Benson Cheruiyot, 24, said the two worked in tandem in the Broad Street Run until Patrick pulled away in the final hundred meters.
"The wind was good," the runner-up said. "We both had PRs (personal records) today but I had no kick at the end."
