Marine Corps Historic Half Economic Impact Exceeds $4 Million Dollars for Fredericksburg Area

QUANTICO, Va. - (September 2009) - The Fredericksburg, Virginia area received $2.1 million in spending over the Marine Corps Historic Half marathon weekend during May 2009 according to a report from Mary Washington University. The study, which randomly interviewed runners and spectators - both local and visitors, found that more than 14,500 people came to the area as a part of the Historic Half generating an estimated economic impact (the total impact of spending using the multiplier effect) of between $4.4 and $6.5 million.

"The City of Fredericksburg has welcomed the Historic Half with open arms," said Rick Nealis, Director. "It is thrilling to see how the event has made such a positive economic impact on the local community."

Historic Half visitors over the 1.47-day stay predominately spent on food, lodging, entertainment, local transportation and retail purchases. This generated between $142,000 and $212,000 in local government revenue, more than double the figures from the inaugural event in 2008.

"In just two years the Historic Half has become a signature event for Fredericksburg," said Mayor Thomas J. Tomzak. "The economic impact of the Historic Half to Fredericksburg is considerable and we value our partnership with such a well-run, high quality event."

The third Historic Half will be held in Fredericksburg on Sunday, May 16, 2010. Online registration for the race will begin at noon eastern on Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Runners will be able to sign-up on a first come, first served basis at www.marinecorpshistorichalf.com. The $65 entry fee includes all race materials, timing device and technical participant shirt.

The 13.1 mile course will be held entirely within Fredericksburg city limits, beginning and ending at the Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center. In conjunction with the half-marathon, the MCM will host the Semper Fred 5K as well as the Healthy Lifestyle Expo, a two-day event featuring health, fitness, diet and wellness exhibitors and vendors.
