VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Runners from all 50 states and several foreign countries traveled to Virginia Beach, Virginia for the 42nd edition of the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon weekend for a variety of reasons including a reprieve from one of the harshest winters on record.

With five events, there was a distance for everyone to choose from: the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon, Anthem Shamrock Half Marathon, TowneBank Shamrock 8K, Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile or the Leprechaun Dash.

Cooler than normal temperatures in the mid-40s and gusty winds coming off the Atlantic Ocean did not deter Kennedy Kemei (right), 35, a Kenyan who now lives in Chapel Hill, N.C. He led a field of 2,782 marathon finishers and raised his hand with a number one to the cheering crowds on the famous finish by the looming 34-foot statue of King Neptune. His winning time was 2 hours, 18 minutes, 24 seconds.

“There was no one to help pace,” said Kemei who ran most of the race by himself. When asked about the weather conditions he shook his head, “The wind was very, very tough.” While Kemei did not reach his goal time, he was pleased for his girlfriend, Susan Jerotich, who won the Anthem Shamrock Half Marathon.

Colorado’s Mario Macias, 32, racing for BRC/adidas, used Saturday’s TowneBank Shamrock 8K where he finished third (24:27) as a warm-up for Sunday’s marathon where he took the runner-up spot in 2:21:42. Minneapolis-based Chris Erichsen, 28, who won the race in 2011, had to settle for third in 2:22:33.

In the women’s competition, Colorado’s Joanna Zeiger, 40, who competed for Team USA in triathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics came into the race with the singular goal of running 2:43, the “B” marathon standard for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.

“I went out the first half conservatively in 1:21,” she said, knowing that the second half would be windy. At mile 16 she found herself in the lead and her goal changed. “Once I took the lead I did all I could to stay there.” Zeiger finished first overall in 2:43:59 and was also the top master. Alexandra “Sasha” Varanka, 28, from Amherst, N.H., races for the New Balance Boston Club and was glad to get out of the cold weather and came to the resort town with several family members. She finished second in 2:45:07. Russian Irina Alexandrova, 33, who resides in Hebron, Ky., finished one minute later in 2:46:07.

The first event of the day was the Anthem Shamrock Half Marathon with more than 3,800 finishers also provided a dramatic sprint for the win. Kenyan Kiprono Kurgat, 25, of Chapel, Hill, N.C., and Morroccan Mohamed Fadil, 32, of Albuquerque, N.M., battled side-by-side down the oceanfront. Kurgat pulled ahead at the end to win by one second, 1:04:23 to 1:04:24. Jeff Weiss, 27, from Ravenswood, W. Va., took third in 1:04:47.

Kenyan Susan Jerotich, 26, from Chapel Hill, North Carolina ran 1:13:42 to win the women’s race. Susanna Sullivan, 23, from Falls Church, VA took second place in 1:14:22 and could not stop smiling and sharing her good news of qualifying for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.

“Last year I ran 1:16:31 and was fitter but this year I was more confident,” she said. Kristina Vegh, 30, from Raleigh, N.C., took the final podium spot in 1:15:40.
