> Inaugural NYC Run To Liberty 10K - Labor Day
NEW YORK - (August 15, 2002) - Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced the inaugural Labor Day weekend NYC Run to Liberty 10K, a 10K open race for people of all ages and abilities as well as a series of kids races and a weekend of exciting Lower Manhattan activities for the entire family.

> Drossin, Hoff to Defend Rock 'n' Roll Half-Marathon Titles
The 2001 men's and women's champions will return for a chance at the second annual Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon title on Sunday, September 1, 2002. Shadrack Hoff of South Africa and Deena Drossin of the U.S. will battle a talented field of elite athletes all capable of grabbing a victory in Virginia Beach and a piece of the $80,000 total prize purse.

On a rainy summer morn, 104 runners assembled at mile marker 8 of the Capitol Crescent Trail for the start of this year's Bastille Day 4 miler - quite an impressive turnout for the conditions.

> Ruiz Wins Second Yorktown Freedom Run Title
Bryce Ruiz and Kristine Wilson won Thursday's Yorktown Freedom Run 5K for the second time, both having won initially two years ago. There Were a record 766 entries in the 14th annual race, held to kick off the Yorktown 4th of July Celebration.

> Williamsburg Jaycees Run for Life 10K
Last year's Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix for the women came down to a close battle between Alison Holinka (who won seven CRR races for 70 points) and runnerup Gina Bohlmann (scoring 59 points in eight races).

He entered the Nissan Buffalo Marathon late last week because he has bills to pay and he's virtually broke. The 43-year-old professional runner from Lafayette, Ind., made only $12,000 last year because of a torn Achilles tendon.

A steady rain and temperature in the high 50s did not put a damper on the 19th running of the Sallie Mae 10K, a benefit for the D.C.- College Access Program. The top runners were going after $18,000 in cash awards (equal for males and females) up through age 80 and over.

> International Athletes Announced for UPMC Health System/City of Pittsburgh Marathon
On her first visit to Pittsburgh last year, Violetta Kryza of Poland decided to take a tour of the city. Starting in front of the City/County building in downtown Pittsburgh, and guided only by a blue line painted on the roadway, she ran by herself to Point State Park, covering 26.2 miles of city streets in two hours, 34 minutes and 16 seconds. In the process she won the UPMC Health System/City of Pittsburgh Marathon by nearly two and one-half minutes.
