The Philadelphia Recreation Department is expecting 15,000 participants on Sunday, May 7th for the 27th Annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run – the second-largest 10-mile race in the country. Runners will head south on Broad Street starting at 8:30 AM through the heart of Philadelphia on the city’s longest, historic main artery. Independence Blue Cross has been the event’s title sponsor since 1997. All pledges and donations from the Run will benefit the American Cancer Society.
The Blue Cross Broad Street Run consistently attracts top distance runners from around the world, along with a loyal, enthusiastic contingent from Philadelphia and surrounding areas. Spectators can expect terrific finishing times, as Runner’s World has named the course one of the fastest 10-mile tracks in the country. In 2002, Kenya’s Simon Wangai ran the course in 45:16, the best 10-mile time ever recorded in the U.S. Last year’s respective men’s and women’s winners were Kenyan John Itati and Russian Mariana Ivanova.
