Providence, RI – Runners gearing up for upcoming races, including the Cox Providence Rhode Races on May 3, will have a chance to receive some training tips from running legends Steve Jones and Geoff Smith. Jones, the former marathon world record holder and the two-time winner of the Chicago Marathon, will offer tips and answer questions during an appearance on Saturday, April 18 at 9 a.m. at Rhode Runner, 271 South Main St., Providence. Jones will be joined by two-time Boston Marathon winner Smith.

“With the Cox Providence Rhode Races less than a month away, this is a great opportunity for runners to ask questions to marathon legends and learn from two of the best,” said Charlie Breagy, race director, Cox Providence Rhode Races.

Competing in his first marathon in Chicago in 1984, Jones crossed the finish line first in 02:08:05 and in the process broke the world record held by his training partner, Australian Rob DeCastella. A year later, Jones recorded his career best marathon time of 02:07:13 to capture his second straight e Chicago Marathon title. He still owns the fastest marathon time among British runners.

Smith, who is also a two-time Olympian, recorded his best marathon finish when he sprinted to the finish line in 2:09:08 at the 1983 New York City Marathon, finishing behind winner Rod Dixon by a mere nine seconds.

As a senior at Providence College, Smith won the 1984 Boston Marathon in 2:10:34 – more than four minutes ahead of the next competitor.

Close to 5,000 runners are slated to converge in Providence next month for the second annual Cox Providence Rhode Races on Sunday, May 3. This unique event features the Cox Sports Marathon and Willow Tree Half Marathon and a 5k race. To register visit: www.CoxRhodeRaces.com
