Providence, RI – Nearly 5,000 runners are expected to converge in downtown Providence, May 3 to take part in the 2009 Cox Providence Rhode Races. This unique event features the Cox Sports Marathon, Willow Tree Half Marathon and a 5k race.

“The city of Providence is pleased and honored to host the second annual Cox Providence Rhode Races,” said Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline. “Fans of marathon and 5k racing who are coming from near and far are sure to enjoy the spirited competition of this exciting event.”

Runners – ranging in age from 8-76 years-old – are coming from as far away as Germany, Scotland, Australia and the United Kingdom to compete in Sunday’s event showcasing Providence and its surrounding communities.

“The Cox Providence Rhode Races offers something for everyone,” said Charlie Breagy, race director, Cox Providence Rhode Races. “We have a wide-range of participants scheduled to compete, from experienced runners to first-time marathoners. It’s going to be a great event.”

The course continues through Barrington to the YMCA. Runners then head back towards Providence, via the East Bay Bike Path and then continue over the Washington Bridge back through India Point Park towards the Capital City. The marathon concludes on Exchange Terrace in Downtown Providence.

The Cox Sports Marathon and Willow Tree Half Marathon begin at 8 a.m. on Exchange Terrace. The 5k starts at 11 a.m. on Washington Street (between Burnside Park and the bus depot). Full course descriptions of all races are located at www.coxrhoderaces.com.
