Nashua (December 21, 2007) – The seventh annual Medical Center 6K in downtown Nashua, New Hampshire will be the USATF-NE 6K Championship, and one of seven races—the only New Hampshire event—to be named to the prestigious New England Grand Prix. The 6K was selected at the USATF-New England monthly/selection meeting at Brandeis University, and joins an impressive list of events for the 2008 series, one of the best USATF Association series in the country.
The other races selected, 2008 USATF-New England Championships and Grand Prix:
· Mar 15 - New Bedford Half-Marathon, New Bedford MA
· June 1 - Rhody 5K, Lincoln RI
· July 29 - Newburyport 10 Mile, Newburyport MA
· Aug 9 - Bridge of Flowers 10K, Shelburne Falls MA
· Sept 6 - Ollie 5 Mile, South Boston MA
· Oct 19 - Bay State Marathon, Lowell MA
The 2008 Medical Center 6K will be held on May 11, 2008 in Nashua, New Hampshire beginning at 9:30 a.m. There will be $4,300 in prize money offered, including prizes for USATF teams. The race is centrally located, easy to get to from anywhere in New England, offers plenty of parking, and excellent organization.
This race is managed by the Gate City Striders (USATF 157), known for their excellent organization of such events as the 1,500-person Applefest Half Marathon and the USATF-NE Mountain Circuit race, Pack Monadnock.
The 6K is certified (NH02001WN), has a scenic course that winds through neighborhoods and along tree-lined roads, through the campus of Rivier College, and along the Nashua Country Club golf course with a flat, fast finish. It begins and ends at the Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, Prospect Street, Nashua. There is an accompanying non-competitive walk. Race facilities are excellent.
The Medical Center’s 6K offers such novel amenities as free team and family photos, along with an excellent post race spread that has become known for specialties such as “Dave’s Famous Buffalo Chili”. And of course, you can spend a morning with Mom.
This race serves a very important purpose: It is a primary source of funds for Fitness University for Kids, the well known, award-winning fitness/running program administered by the Gate City Striders, now in its 19th year. This program is more important than ever, and tremendously important in the fight against childhood obesity.
In addition to prize money for the race, the female and male winners will each have the opportunity to earn a $500 honorarium as “Deans of Fitness” for the Fitness University Finals Day in Nashua next July. Past Deans have included Joan Samuelson, Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter, and Lynn Jennings.
